Mordecai asked to return in non-playing role

Featured Replies

From the Herald forum:

The Marlins haven't told us what their strategy is. As of this writing, the team still has 90 minutes to offer Mordy arbitration but his agent said earlier today the team has asked him to return in a non-playing role and Mike would prefer to check out the playing offers he has from four other teams first. The team's philosophy has always been to use veterans on the bench and keep the kids playing in the minors. But perhaps their apparent decision to let Mordy means they are rethinking that.

The Marlins made a token offer to Weathers, who is entertaining at least one multiyear proposal worth $3 million. They expressed marginal interest in retaining Valdez and Mordecai, who had played for General Manager Admin Beinfest and owner Jeffrey Loria since 2000 in Montreal.

"We didn't even discuss a whole lot as far as bringing me into camp," said Mordecai, who has received inquires from other teams. "They have some players that deserve a shot to play, and they're going to give them a chance. Admin was very up front with me."

The Marlins did speak to Mordecai, who next week turns 37, about staying in the organization, likely in a player development capacity. He is not ready to make the transition.

Asked whether the Marlins offered him the vacant Class A Jupiter managerial post, Mordecai said: "There were a lot of other questions and things we talked about. There may be a unique situation for me to stay with the Marlins."

I really hope we retain him in some sort of capacity. He'll make a good manager one day.

I hope Mordy considers "the unique situation" the Marlins have offered.

He will be a MLB coach or manager some day (sooner rather than later.)

It's tough to hang up the spikes but better to timely do it to develop longer-term career alternatives.

That would be SWEET if he came to Jupiter...

but I'll understand if he wants to keep playing instead.

He still can play. Hes decent in the field, useful b/c he plays every position except pitcher, and can still hit well enough for a bench player. Mordy needs to keep playing

Dont want him back as a player. Do want him as a coach. We have plenty of other guys who need to play and be given a shot.

If he comes back as manager that would definitely be cool, but he if has offers to go play elsewhere i would not blame him

"..... unique situation...." Hmmmm....

Are we talking player-coach here?

I'd kick Cox to the pen and install Mordi as his replacement @ 3B.

Jack would not accept Mordy as a coach. He is too spunky and forty years too young.

:lol

I'll miss Mordy.

Please be true.
