December 10, 200421 yr do the braves have any pitching left to compete with the phils and marlins for the Nl. East.....i mean with the current braves team....i think our team has a good shot at beating the phils and the braves and winning the nl. east :thumbup has anyone heard anything from the braves camp.... asides from maybe making smoltz a starter again are they working on anything new
December 10, 200421 yr They're trying to get Hudson for Giles. Only time I have heard about the Braves besides them losing players via free agentcy. I love watching all these Atlanta players leave for different teams. Getting so tired of hearing about that division winning streak.
December 10, 200421 yr It is more like will the Phils and Marlins compete with the Braves? They are the Champs until somebody knocks them off.
December 10, 200421 yr Yeah, The Braves are the winners until someone else knocks them off....certainly the moves we've made so far this offseason will NOT help us win the division and may not even get us second place.

And we still haven't addressed the offense yet. And unlike last year I don't think you can ride on hoping Lowell to carry the team for two months hitting about .370.
December 10, 200421 yr Look at what happened last year! Everyone thought that the battle for the N.L. East would be between the Marlins and the Phils. Everyone thought that finally the Braves wouldn't win the N.L. East. And look at what happened! You can't just assume that a team who has won something for a very long time will just lose it because it makes sense. I won't count the Barves out until they are out mathematically. They will find a way, and there is a chance that they will just totally blow out all the other teams like they've done the past few years. We've had no chance at winning our division the past few years. The Braves always catch on fire during the regular season and then when it comes to the playoffs they forget what they did during the regular season. But hopefully the Braves won't win the N.L. East this year!
December 10, 200421 yr the Braves will always have pitching if Mazzone is around 631607 So true. I think I could probably go 13-9 with a 4.50 ERA with Mazzone as my pitching coach... And I was never a pitcher....
December 10, 200421 yr The Braves won because we lost. For half the season we left everyone in the dust and then we collapsed. September's schedule didn;t help either. If our team can get some depth behind the regs we have good a chance as anyone and probably a better chance than the Braves (as they are constituted today).
December 10, 200421 yr For half the season we left everyone in the dust and then we collapsed. 631700 Like I've said. The Marlins went as far as Lowell took them. For the first two months he hit at a .370 clip. We had our 6 game lead or so and then he hit 250 the rest of the year so we saw the lead vaporize by the allstar break and we never recovered.

So what I am saying is, when Lowell hits good the Marlins do good, the Marlins do bad when Lowell isn't hitting, because everyone else showed last year they will be consistent through the year. Alex at times went up and down, but even at his best he was mortal.
December 10, 200421 yr The offense was a problem all year long, not just in the months Lowell wasn't hitting. If you're looking for a reason why we lost the division when we did (June/July) look at the pitching. Burnett was inconsistent. Willis was REALLY inconsistent. Pavano and Penny fell off pace. Beckett was injured every other start. Oliver was terrible starting, and the other starters weren't any better. The bullpen was overmatched from all the short outings and scant run support.
December 12, 200421 yr Anyone who is ready to call the Braves DOA ought to look at the deal they just pulled off with the Brewers. " Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - It was no secret that John Smoltz wanted to move from his closer's role back into the starting rotation for the Atlanta Braves. He'll now get that chance, as the Braves acquired closer Dan Kolb from the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday in exchange for young righthander Jose Capellan and a player to be named later. " How do they do it? Actually I know how they do it, great move.
December 12, 200421 yr Author that answers my question...the braves were up to somthing.....those losers :thumbdown

December 12, 200421 yr Great move by the Braves. They're replaced Wright with Smoltz and now Smoltz's closer role is filled with Kolb. Brilliant move, they save millions by replacing Wright with Kolb and if Smoltz can cut it as a starter they more than likely have a guy that will replace his stats from last season as well. Their bullpen will still probably be one of the best in the league, and if Ramirez can come back strong their rotation should be pretty good. They might surprise yet again.
December 12, 200421 yr who is in the Braves pen anymore? Kolb... Trey Hodges? 632881 The same guys who the Marlins couldn't score off of anyway.

There shouldnt be any rumors about them lacking the talent to win like last year. Their staff could be as dominant as ever if they end up getting Hudson for Giles. Imagine going up against this and LeoM. Hudson Smoltz(I think he reverts to his old form) Hampton Thompson(14-8, 3.72ERA) Ramirez John Scheurholtz will somehow find a way to keep the team in contension and deal with roster contraints.
