December 13, 200421 yr ROTOWORLD: ESPN's Peter Gammons said tonight that the proposed Javier Vazquez-A.J. Burnett swap won't take place. The Marlins likely will hold on to Burnett and see where they are in July. While the popular belief is that Ben Sheets might be everyone's target at the trade deadline, Burnett could be the better bet of the two to be available 633747 expecting us to be sellers so early 633791 That's what they said in '03. We might have to shock the world again. :shifty Come on Beiny work your magic. 633795 Peter Gammons is the most biased commentator around and it seems like he's always way off when it comes to a lot of things. I don't really put much credibility into what he says. 633821 i feel the same. As a matter of fact i feel worse now that gammons reported this, because he's usually wrong 633828 He nailed the Pavano to New York deal.
December 13, 200421 yr That Pavano to New York deal had been reported on WFAN here in NY a full day before it ever popped out of Gammons mouth...
December 13, 200421 yr IMO i think that if they dont agree to an extension by the end of the trading deadline then i would go a ahead and trade him
December 13, 200421 yr No way the Marlins can pull off a similar deal in July. It's hard enough to find one competitive team willing to give up a good player. Let alone one in the middle of a pennant race. 2006 rotation: Beckett, Willis, Jason Johnson, Leiter, one of the Jupiter Five 633768 Leiter will be in the booth with Tommy and Boog(knock on wood) in 2006, not in our starting rotation. One of the big reasons he came to the Fish was because he was guaranteed a broadcasting job as an analyst.

Did I already mention Jason Johnson? Did anyone get the point of my post? Does anyone think that 2006 rotation is very good? Does anyone think Burnett wants to come back? Does anyone think he won't turn down an offer now to become a free agent next winter?
December 13, 200421 yr Author I think what all this says is that Beinfest is holding out for more than what the Ynkees are offering. Does anyone have a problem with that. According to the comments above the Yankees may also be waiting to see how much of Kevin Brown's salary they have to pick up. AJ has significant value because many budget conscious teams can go after him - the Cardinals for example. The Hudson thing is interesting. Remember that we will have a $10 million windfall next season when pudge and Hampton's money is gone. Maybe they think the can sign him long term???
December 13, 200421 yr Vazquez for 3 years > Burnett for 1 year But something that was very, not odd but suprising, that the Diamondbacks had Burnett on their list of 10 pitchers they would accept for RJ...
December 13, 200421 yr Will you get a Vazquez in July? No. You'd get prospects and role players. 633779 So? Great prospects + money might be better than Vazquez. We have a great track record in taking good prospects and making them good MLB players. If we get Perez now, not having Vazquez wouldn't be the worse thing in the world.

Vazquez is an awesome Cy Young caliber pitcher, and I'd rather go with him now instead of getting half a season from Burnett and some cash/prospects.
