A reason to hope the Expos live in DC

Per ESPN:

MLB can act unilaterally to contract two teams after the 2006 season if they feel they need to. The owners have to agree to it and the Players' Association are okay with what baseball decides on the matter.

I don't believe ESPN was entirely correct on that matter. IIRC, that deal is only valid through the end of the current collective bargaining agreement, and only after a certain amount of time. I think, basically, the owners would have to contract within the last 6 months of the deal, or else it doesn't happen because it goes back to negotiations. Either way, I don't see the owners contracting.

Id say The D-Rays

Nope. The city of St Pete was smart and made the D-Rays (and, I believe MLB) sign an ironclad guarantee to stay at the Tropicana dome for the next 30-odd years. Basically, MLB will pay through the nose if they try to contract the D-Rays.

What's the other team that contracts?

Well when MLB tried to contract 2 teams a few years ago they had three teams on their list:

1. Expos

2. Twins

3. Marlins

If the Expos go to DC, the Marlins are toast.

the twins are getting a new stadium and if the Expos manage to stay in DC, then we are screwed.

if we don't have a new stadium by then, we're toast anyways. if we're gonna lose the team anyway, would rather contract than move to vegas. bottom line is, we gotta get this stadium deal done, let some other team sit on the chopping block for a while.

what MLB can do is contract the Devil Rays and move another team to Tampa Bay

  • 2 weeks later...

I had heard rumors from several sources from within MLB that if the Expos-to-D.C. thing didn't pan out, that they would have moved the Expos to...get this...Shea Stadium for at least one season.

Take that however you like.

The Attorney General of Florida will protect the Marlins and Devil Rays.

Charlie like Bob before him both are very good at litigating with small details.

I had heard that too. Mets apparently had a plan in place to do this.....even including TV and Radio deals that could be negotiated with FSN New York/MSG on TV and Bloomberg Radio or ESPN 1050 for the flagship

No, the language of the contract says the Tampa Bay Devil Rays must play in the stadium. So they'd have to move another team and rename them to Tampa Bay Devil Rays, not worth the hassle.

Devil Rays have a lease with the City of Saint Petersburg and Pinellas County (now owns the Dome) that lasts until the end of the 2027 season.
