How did our payroll in '97 compare to other teams?

I know we had less than all three teams we defeated in the playoffs. Now were we the fourth highest, I'm not sure. Top 10 though.

It was the 4th highest at 53.3 million. Yankees had the highest payroll that year at 63.7 million(wow that has come a long way since then.)

there was that period around 99-01 where salaries skyrocketed and those enormous contracts started being signed, i remmeber when we gave sheff that six year 61 million or so contract and it was like the 4th most expensive contract out there. now plenty of guys make 10 million a year

These contracts are ridiculous. I'll never forget the night Barry Bonds signed with the Giants. I was watching Sportscenter and it came in as breaking news. He signed the biggest contract in baseball at the time.. A whopping $42mil for 6 years.... Now you got guys like Russ Ortiz, Kris Benson, and Jaret Wright making this kind of money...

i think we were 4th, behind the yanks, indians and orioles, a little higher than atlanta`s. not sure though.
