Colangelo set to return to Marlins organization

Despite hitting .325 last season, 1994 Hylton graduate Mike Colangelo spent the entire summer in Triple-A. Nevertheless, he enjoyed his first year in the Florida Marlins system so much that he has signed on with the franchise for 2005.

"I like everything about the organization; I just felt comfortable with the front office, the coaching staff and the players," said Colangelo, who signed a minor-league contract for one year.

In his first season in the Marlins organization, Colangelo, a 28-year-old outfielder, hit 16 home runs and drove in 73 runs in just 97 games for the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast League. He also was named the team's Most Community Minded Player.

Florida, coming off a World Series championship, went 83-79 last year -- nine games behind National League wild card Houston.

"I think I did what I wanted to accomplish," Colangelo said of his play with the Isotopes. "This year, I think if I have the same season I'll be up [in the major leagues]. I think there will be more opportunity because they need to win and they'll call up who's hot. Last year was an up-and-down season for our major-league team and no one got hurt in the outfield, so they didn't need to go to any of the minor-league outfielders."

Colangelo, who has played in the big leagues with Anaheim, San Diego and Oakland, likely will head to minor-league spring training for the second straight year. Until camp breaks, he's active in his community back home. The former George Mason University star is running a series of camps on Sundays at Forest Park High School, giving 275 players from all over Northern Virginia better access to college recruiters and to offseason instruction.
