How would you use our new bullpen in 2005?

Featured Replies

Mota seemed to have trouble when we most needed him in 2004. I hope he earns the closer's spot in ST and makes us forget about Armando...

Closer: Alfonseca (Coming into Spring Training I would give him the job to lose)

Setup in 8th: Mota (His job but he could go up to closer if he earns it)

Setup in 7th: Spooney

Setup in 6th: Jones

Setup in 5th: Bump/Howard/Wayne/whoever is in the farm that we wish to look at

I am not saying they all should be used every night, but it is nice knowing we have a bullpen capable of such depth.

Oh... because we have a bullpen? let me see:

1. a guy that is coming from Tommy John surgery and hasn't pitched since 2002.

2. a guy who at 31 has blown 11 saves from 16 saves opportunities.

3. a guy with 24 fingers and a herniated disc who failed as a closer.

4. a guy who is almost 47 years old but writes free-lance for a newspaper.

5. a guy born without a hand but with an incredible fielding percentage.

6. a guy who was a once-upon-a-time prized prospect and had TJ surgery too.

7. a guy who faltered after the All Star game and gave up like 20+ homers.

8. Mr. inconsistency (Howard) and Mr. I-am-too-afraid-to-pitch-aggresively (Bump)

9. a failure as a starter and overworked as a reliever.

please... forgive me if I can't hide my enthusiasm... :whistle

Forget about Armando? How can we forget 47 saves and that incredibly sparking ERA of his when confronted with the 11 blown saves in 16 opportunities of Mota? :crying

Closer: Mota

Setup: Alfonseca

7th inning: Spooney/Jones

6th inning: Riedling/Jones

Long Relief: Howard

Lefty: Find someone

Honestly, I think this bullpen is more than solid... and I think we won't have to trade for any relievers, barring injuries of course. It's easily much better than last year's bullpen at the beginning... or even the end of the year. Our middle relief is incredibly solid compared to last year. Honestly, I think our pitching is fine the way it is... we just need a fifth starter that can go 5-6 innings on a regular basis. Our starters 1-4 are very good. Overall I think the team is a little better than last year's team... I say add 5-6 wins from last year. That's 88 or 89 wins... and if we're in it at the end of the season, then we'll make a trade or two for an outfield bat and get it done, just like we got Niner in 2003. To those of you that are frustrated by our offseason so far, don't despair. We've got a good team. :thumbup

Alfonseca's job to lose as closer. Mota did zip here in Florida (say what you want about fatigue) to make me rubber stamp him as our closer...besides, he could be an Octavio Dotel in the making.

Other than that, go with Jones as the 7th inning guy for the start of the year, keeping pressure off Spooney until he's ready. Let Riedling be our Leiter/Willis bridge to the 7th, and I absolutely LOVE our 'pen situation going into ST.

There's not much difference between Mota, Alfonseca and Spooney. If the game is close, I'd hand the ball to any one of them. None are as dominant as Benitez, but give three solid options for Jack. Jones-Reidling-Bump atleast projects to be an above-average complimentary core to the bullpen.

There are many questions about Spooney and Alfonseca's health, Mota and Jones' effectiveness, Reidling and Bump's consistency. However these type of questions surround nearly every reliever. In one year a reliever can pull a Benitez and the next a Almanza.

It is on McKeon and his coaching staff and trainers to recognize each pitcher's strengths, weaknesses and availability to turn this staff, or any staff (yes, even a Rivera-Gagne-Benitez-Wagner-Hoffman staff), into an asset for the club.

I like to exaggerate a bit :-) Number 4 is Todd Jones, who is 36 or 37 years old. Number 6 is Hagerty, 7 is Riedling and 9 is Justin Wayne. :o
