December 30, 200421 yr Closer: Alfonseca (Coming into Spring Training I would give him the job to lose) Setup in 8th: Mota (His job but he could go up to closer if he earns it) Setup in 7th: Spooney Setup in 6th: Jones Setup in 5th: Bump/Howard/Wayne/whoever is in the farm that we wish to look at I am not saying they all should be used every night, but it is nice knowing we have a bullpen capable of such depth.
December 30, 200421 yr Mota wore down at the end of the season, but that is understandable. Relievers aren't supposed to throw almost 100 innings.
December 30, 200421 yr Author Hopefully they perform so well in Spring Training and during the season that we won't be able to choose which one.

The only thing that I don't particularly like about that is that it more or less means we won't get as many innings from Mota. Alfonseca also has injury questions, so I don't see why we'd be too sold on him. Closer: Mota Setup: Alfonseca 7th: Spooney 5,6: Jones and Howard in that order I wouldn't mind seeing us putting Spooney as closer later in the season and move Mota's arm into the setup role where he can log in som more innings.
December 30, 200421 yr We all saw how many innings it took AJ to get back to normal once he came back. Spooney is only able to pitch and inning or two at a time, and doesn't have the talent that AJ has. Should we really be slotting this guy in any situation to start the season?

Also, once Spooney is healty, all three of those guys can be interchangeable.

Should we really be slotting this guy in any situation to start the season? 644708 Spooney is going to have more than 6 additional months to get ready to pitch than AJ had. His arm should be in good shape by the end of spring training. The 7th inning is a good place to start him. You know what you are going to get with Alfonseca, an effective closer who isn't lights out, and will blow his share of save opportunities. Mota is more of an unknown...very effective in the set-up role, and yet to prove he can close effectively. Spooney could have the most potential of the three, and could certainly be closing by 2006. Heck, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Spooney vying for the closer spot by the end of the season.
December 30, 200421 yr if spooney bounces back well, i'd slide him into the setup role after the ASB with mota as a 2 inning closer and alfonseca for the tight jams
December 30, 200421 yr I. Hate. Nate. Bump. Not exactly my fav marlin.. The guy has K'd Bonds, but in my mind, is the picture of inconsistancy. So No, no role here. Closer: Mota, great set up, could be great as a closer Setup Man: Tough one, I;m hearing good things about todd jones 7th: Spoony may depending on how his comback turnes out, Alfonsaca is inconsistant, and injured, bad signing, He may end up with this role though.. Setup in 6th: We expect Starter too cover these, we have a great rotation
December 30, 200421 yr Alfonsaca is inconsistant, and injured, bad signing 644775 not for 300K
December 30, 200421 yr "not for 300 K" I'm not talking about money, we plan on using him, and I dont think he can get the job done, You put him in tight spots, you blow the game IMO.

December 30, 200421 yr Alfonsaca is inconsistant, and injured, bad signing 644775 not for 300K 644777 $300K minimum with incentives to $2M. The incentives are based on appearances, not performance.

I prefer incentives based on performance as I believe any player will work harder to achieve it. Why do so many players step up their performance in contract years?
