Dolphins moving to 790 ESPN?

Featured Replies

That is why I had the news on 790 getting the Dolphins before the media right? That is why I told you all the movements would go big time at WQAM?

You guys are just too much. There has to be some bad apples in every barrel.

I don't need to pat myself on the back. I don't appreciate always having to continue to fight you losers.

It all started when I told you all that WQAM had trouble selling the Dolphins because they sucked. Then you all start arguing. Then I tell you in this thread that 790 is winning over the Dolphins because WQAM won't pay the asking price of $4.5 million or anything near it.

I don't rely on message boards, newspapers, or any other sources you guys would wish to have access to to get these tips. When I do use a source like that I always post the link. Whether it be Call of the Game, Radio-Info, the Sun-Sentinel, Palm Beach Post, or Miami Herald....I always cite it and provide a link.

When I get a tip via e-mail or im, I have no link so I just post it as a source. I won't reveal it and as long as they are accurate you should really stop questioning.

You know all you do is bash me and Cape and never post anything insightful to the boards anymore. Maybe you should go see Dr. Jack Nicholson for some anger management. :whistle

How childish? How old are you by the way? 17 is it? Same age as me yet you can't offer anything that is productive at all to this board. This will be the last post on this matter.

If anyone further wants information on this, go back to sending PMs to me. I will try to get an answer for you.

Sorry, not 17. Read the profile, be productive. Post it in the correct forum first, then maybe I'll think about it. And be sure to leave your "source" aka the message boards next time as your "link" you claim to always leave.

I am sorry, when I checked your profile prior to that post it had 2 May 1987. I guess you had to correct your birth year to 1986 so you appear to be age 18.

It's been 2 May 1986 since I joined, sorry kiddo. Guess my birth certificate lied to me :|

And I guess we were all too lucky to have you post again although your last post was already used..

PS. I'm sorry I'm not scared to hide my age, since your obviously not showing yours for a reason.

BTW, here is the true source of the "rumors"

http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=325205&Board=miami

Also Cape, why would "WQAM" tell a 17-year old about what they intend to do? Nice move.

648633

Why? Because I asked WQAM and they told me. WQAM Operations Manager Ray Perry and WWCN host/salesperson David Moulton both confirmed to me that their stations would have the Marlins in 2005 after the deals were finalized.

I recently checked back and was told they hoped to have it signed, sealed, and delivered in 2 weeks.

The deal with 790 was told to me by a source I will not name. The Herald said the Dolphins agreed in principle that 790 would not try to get any other team confirming that rumor.

I don't get all the bad faith when I try to get accurate tips and news for the boards. When I get something and the source is linkable then I will give you the link.

Here is a thread on Stern going to a Palm Beach Station in the old Bull Pen: http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/lofiv...php/t21722.html

notice the link of the source and how I fully disclosed it. I have nothing to hide.

I dont know what some of you guys are talking about, but as far as I am concerned, my man Cape if gold. That's right - GOLD, baby!

Cape, keep on wit yo bad self...

Since Foladar and Shaqman have issues with this "spam" so much, I will create a venue appropriate for it.

That way they can continue their vegetative states undisturbed.

Thanks for the support jonnylons! I appreciate it.

As I alluded to a few days ago, the Dolphins to 790 deal is very bad news for the Fish.

Look what's happening (see today's newspapers). The Dolphins are getting ready to move to 790 but their two biggest cheerleaders (or radio personalities who are pro football mavens) are staying at QAM doing the MORNING AND AFTERNOON DRIVE TIMES.

The Marlins are being squeezed out of the market.

You can forget there ever being a chance in hell that baseball/Marlins gets a fair shake in South Florida with Fat Hank in the morning and the drunk in the afternoon. If you're a "Meeeeechigan" alumni no doubt this is a banner day but for Marlins fans this couldn;t be worse news.

A brilliant strategy by Huizenga. A death knell for the Marlins. This is awful. The Dolphins will control both stations, all football all the time.

As much as I hate to admit it -- I think the above is correct! I wish the Marlins had gone to 790 instead of the Dolphins.

Also.....as neither an 17 nor an 18 year old, I wish Folodar would ease up. I enjoy Capefish's posts most of the time. They are well written and sometimes provocative. That said,,,,,,,he does seem to post too often.

I reread the Herald piece and noticed (OMG!) that Howard David (how did I miss this???) has been offered the 2-4pm slot. Add this to Big O early morning (5-7am) and you have all-football-all-the-time with the biggest Marlins-hater in town, Neil Rogers squeezed in between.

This is just awful for the Marlins. You can forget about any fan support on the radio. This will cost the Marlins millions and millions at the gate. You couldn't ask for a worse scenario than having two all-sports radio stations in your market being controlled (essentially) by the Dolphins, your landlord.

I give Huizenga credit for masterminding this. A brilliant business move, totally co-opting both media outlets and putting the nail in the coffin of the Marlins. I've said for years Huizenga's end game is to drive the Marlins out of the market and I believe, if all that's being reported is true and comes to pass, he will have accomplished his goal.

My hope is they leave QAM entirely, do their own syndication deal, even buy (or lease) an AM station somewhere on the dial and end their relationship with QAM completely.

Marlins2003,

Would you calm down? I wish the Marlins would move to WIOD, but I don't see it happening. This team has gotten worse treatment than WQAM will give out anytime soon and 790 is not stable financially to pay the Marlins.

? Some WQAM employees are downplaying the expected loss of the Dolphins. Two said the Marlins, who are expected to renew with WQAM, are considered the better financial investment largely because they provide more programming hours (at least 177 games, compared with 20 for the Dolphins).

And WQAM general manager Greg Reed pointed out last year that NFL broadcast rights have lost some appeal because fans with access to Sirius Satellite Radio can hear the call of any game.

? Before pursuing the Dolphins, 790 expressed interest in the Marlins. But WQAM's right-to-match clause with the Marlins essentially eliminated any realistic chance of the baseball team changing stations.

? Among the finalists for the Marlins TV play-by-play job are radio announcer Jon Sciambi and Seattle Mariners pregame and postgame host Rich Waltz (who finished No. 2 behind new Cubs voice Len Kasper when the Marlins job was last open). The Marlins are expected to televise nearly 150 games, including 95 on FSNF and others on a noncable station (probably Pax-35).

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/10586499.htm

Just because WQAM was a certain way in the past, does not mean it cannot change. I still prefer 610, but 560 pays the money and the money will make the team better on the field.

A better product means less bitching from WQAM. So WQAM is essentially paying the Marlins so their hosts don't bitch about the Marlins so much.

WQAM also offers an established network platform that 790 cannot. 610 has too many conflicts with the Heat and they weren't able to top 560's offer.

In other words, WQAM makes money from the Marlins...not any talk show host....not even Rogers. WQAM is still around because of the Florida Marlins.

Repeat that to yourself several times. WQAM will change, as soon as talent becomes available. 560 is not married to anyone and is quick to hit the dump button.

Something I don't approve of keeping the 55 games on free TV unless they get a free TV network all over the state to carry all 55 games.

 • Author

Oh, another thing is Manbitch is going to lose 30 minutes a day when the Marlins On Deck show goes on at 6:30 and even more during a day game.

First of all Cape (and I am one of those who appreciates your posts regarding media in South Florida) the fact that you cannot see the effect of this move on the viability of the Marlins does not mean it isn't so.

What QAM is doing is employing a strategy to minimize the value (to ESPN 790) of signing the Dolphins by diluting the marketplace for football talk and their (790) resultant increased listenership (which translates into more ad dollars) by competing head to head against them, and more importantly they are doing it at the expense of the Marlins, who are captives to QAM because of their contractural "match" rights with the Fish.

In essense the Marlins are being thrown to the wolves as QAM saturates the broadcast market with football talk and football personalities in hopes of destroying any chance of profitability forthe competition. By putting Goldberg up against Joe Rose and Mandich up against whoever is the afternoon drive time host(s) at 790, QAM will be able to use revenues from Marlins broadcasts as leverage against 790.

This will not be a short term phenomena, it will last the entire length of the Dolphins/790 contract. Mandich and Goldberg are not going to be signed short term, they both can be expected to sign long term deals. Legally binding deals. Deals that will very expensive for QAM to jettison.

Let me paint a picture for you. Jim Mandich and Hank Goldberg broadcasting this year's Marlins FanFest. That should really build interest in the team. lololol.

Again I say this is very very bad news for the Florida Marlins. I am amazed you are blind to it. There will be zero opportunity for radio talkshow audience growth and building fan/supporter enthusiam for baseball in South Florida as long as the Marlins are at QAM.

The only way around the matching rights clause is to not award the contract to anyone else and take it in-house, even if it's for one season. Then and only then would the Marlins be able to negotiate their rights on a level playing field. The best thing they could is go to another station, let QAM and 790 fight it our over football, have total control over their product and start again in 2006.

I suspect what will happen is, without the Marlins revenue to fortify their position, QAM will quickly find themselves in a hatchet fight without a hatchet and then (2006) turn to the Marlins to cut a new deal, but only when their stock price has plummeted and their impact in the community has been seriously diminished. If they want to re-sign the Marlins it will cost them an arm and leg and they will then have to offer the Marlins legitimate baseball oriented on-air personalities.

Will it be 610? Who knows? It can be any station on the AM dial or for that matter an FM station where they can either buy the station or absent that, lease time to do their own broadcasts.

It is their only hope. Their last chance. Cut the cord with QAM. Let's hope they do it.

Marlins2003,

I don't think either could bill well enough to stay alive in such a stalemate. WQAM lost the Dolphins because the Dolphins did not sell. They lost big money on the Dolphins and the Marlins are a moneymaker. They are keeping this new lineup for no longer to one year in order to lessen the blow from the loss of football, in my opinion.

WQAM was the home of the Marlins long before the Dolphins came knocking. 790 was leasing time to shows nobody would dream was on the radio before and ESPN Radio of South Florida is leasing it.

But what if Jefferson-Pilot sells WAXY? It has been rumored they will do so and to Infinity. Infinity would then kick off the ESPN Radio through some abstract clause JP likely has in the contract, leaving the Dolphins and 790's management with no comparable signal.

Marlins2003,

..."I don't think either could bill well enough to stay alive in such a stalemate. WQAM lost the Dolphins because the Dolphins did not sell. They lost big money on the Dolphins and the Marlins are a moneymaker..."

649753

Which is exactly the reason you walk away (even if the Marlins lose $2,000,000 the first year doing so) and force one them back to the bargaining table without the matching rights clause being in effect.

Depriving QAM the revenue they need to compete is the only way for the Marlins to gain a true media foothold in this market.

Problem is that the Dolphins signed 790 to an exclusivity clause not allowing 790 to acquire the rights of the Marlins, Panthers, Heat or Dolphins. WIOD would be the only realistic option, but WIOD has the Heat and the conflicts could cause issues with one team (likely the Marlins) being forced onto 940 WINZ.

However, the Marlins could get around WQAM's clause be signing a barter, revenue-sharing deal with Clear Channel Radio of South Florida and assuming a partnership in the venture with WIOD being the flagship.

It could be done, the Heat use this option......but is it likely? I say no. I hope however that I am wrong.

WIOD would love to have the Marlins. I know they would because they always report on the Marlins, they always are after the Marlins, and WIOD wants to save face with its Tampa and Atlanta sister-stations who hold baseball rights.

WIOD and the Marlins would be the perfect match in my opinion, but do the Marlins and WIOD agree so much to set aside the money....that is what shall determine this.

I hope Clear Channel wins it....I really do. I heard rumors that they could have thrown something like this on the table, but I have no official word other than "We would love to have the Marlins, but it is out of our control."

 • Author

Clear Channel holds the flagship or network rights to the following teams:

Atlanta Braves

Cincinnati Reds

Houston Astros

Colorado Rockies

Baltimore Orioles

Tampa Bay Devil Rays (being negotiated due to move from 970 WFLA to 1250 WHNZ)

Cleveland Indians

I'm aware of the exclusivity deal that being discussed between 790 and the Dolphins.

It really doesn't matter whether it's Clear Channel, XYZ or some podunk religious or foreign language station where the owner wants to become a millionaire overnight. They need an outlet in the market so they can have a flagship and build their network.

The point is - break the matching right clause in the contract and while you're doing it get out of the way of the bloodbath between 790 and QAM over football fan listenership.

Don't pay for your own funeral.
