Dolphins moving to 790 ESPN?

The Dolphins are brokering a deal that would move the team's radio broadcasts from their current radio station, 560 WQAM, to 790 ESPN Radio next season.

The Dolphins are closing in on an agreement that would switch their radio broadcasts to 790 ESPN Radio, ending an eight-year affiliation with their current flagship station, 560 WQAM.

The club and 790 ESPN still have details that must be worked out and lawyers must still proof and approve the contract before it can be signed. Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga must also agree to the switch and one objectionable detail can cause him to scrap the deal.

But a major portion of the negotiations have already been completed and agreed to in principle, according to sources close to the talks.

Part of the deal would guarantee the Dolphins of being the only team whose broadcasts would air on 790 ESPN. Currently, the Dolphins are one of four teams -- the Marlins, Panthers and Hurricanes are the others -- whose games are broadcast on WQAM.

Another part of the deal still being worked out would make the Dolphins an active partner with the new station.

OTHER DETAILS

Some of the details that have not been agreed upon yet include the status of play-by-play man Howard David and color analyst Jim Mandich because both have contracts with WQAM and the Dolphins. David's contract with the station expires before the start of next season, but Mandich's deal runs beyond that and he also has a daily talk show on WQAM. That creates a conflict to have him do broadcasts on one station and a show on another.

But that detail was termed ''negotiable'' by sources.

Barring a last-minute snag, a deal could be signed within the next month, a source said. Another source said the talks between the Dolphins and 790 ESPN are so far along, it is unlikely WQAM would make a last-minute pitch to retain the team.

The Dolphins declined comment Friday on the possibility they could be switching stations. ''We're not going to comment where negotiations stand, and to say we're close to signing with one particular outlet or another is premature,'' the club said in a statement.

WQAM general manager Greg Reed did not return a message left on his office voicemail, and ESPN majority owner Joel Fienberg was out of town and unavailable.

ONGOING TALKS

Negotiations between the Dolphins and 790 ESPN have been ongoing for several weeks even as there has been little communication between the club and WQAM representatives. One source said the Dolphins had initially set the price of their broadcast rights at $4.5 million.

That price was deemed too high by WQAM. If a deal is finalized with 790 ESPN, it will not reach the $4.5 million figure, a source said.

If WQAM loses the Dolphins to ESPN it could mark a shift in power among South Florida sports talk stations from the long-standing station to the fledgling station that has been on the air less than six months.

A switch might also affect WQAM's ability to sell advertising for the four-hour pregame show that precedes Dolphins games and the two-hour postgame show.

My "sources" nailed it. Another detail on this, the Marlins will get over $4.5 million for their rights from WQAM in the deal currently being considered. That would put that the Marlins Radio Rights will be worth much more than the Dolphins.

This deal also guarantees that 790 will not be able to afford the Marlins, Hurricanes, Heat or Panthers leaving them to their respective flagships. (WQAM or WIOD as the case may be)

Some people need to come here and eat crow. Good Job Cape. The main factor for the Marlins is the money. If they are getting that much it is a good thing. I still can't believe the Heat negotiated all their deals before the got shaq. Ouch!

Exactly what I was thinking. No one really doubted Cape's report. But him calling people from another message board "sources" is quite ridiculous.

Both of you are tools, his sources can't be revealed, and you can ask him. His sources are quite credible.

And he just posted the message board link to prove to you that he wasn't the only who heard the rumored move.

Le Pwn to both of you.

Of course,

If both of you knew anything about that board you would know it is all-ego, all-the-time and not very credible. However, I got 2 seperate e-mails and both mentioned the Dolphins and 790.

Of course I also got told about Mad Dog possibly jumping dog houses and the Marlins getting more $$$ than the Dolphins was likely.....but you guys must have had psychic abilities to read the brains of the people in charge because the Radio-Info Board has no mention of it.

Go look, find for me that Mad Dog could jump, find for me (other than my post) that Majic 102.7 is the likely FM partner, find for me that the Dolphins will get less than the Marlins are rumored to get.

Stadium should come soon hopefully, I don't expect anything huge in February, so Early Jan. and Mid to Late March are the times for peak activity.

Oh no, the 14 year olds are at it again with their "sources" aka reading the paper/message boards. BTW, how do the Dolphins somehow end up in the Marlins section? Are they a new baseball team? :whistle

That is why I had the news on 790 getting the Dolphins before the media right? That is why I told you all the movements would go big time at WQAM?

You guys are just too much. There has to be some bad apples in every barrel.
