July 10, 200323 yr If trade talks with the Marlins continue to progress involving Armando Benitez, the Mets plan to ask for a pretty big fish in return: former No. 1 overall pick Adrian Gonzalez. No proposals were made and no trade was imminent, a source said, but the possibility of a deal bears watching. Gonzalez, a 21-year-old sweet-swinging minor-league first baseman with Gold Glove potential, was the top pick in 2000 as a California-based schoolboy. He was named Florida's No. 3 prospect by Baseball America this offseason, having been passed on the organizational depth chart by first baseman Jason Stokes, a second-round pick from the same year. Gonzalez has been compared to a young Rafael Palmeiro, who didn't show much power in his first few years. He had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his wrist in December and was demoted from Triple-A Albuquerque to Double-A Carolina in late May, leading some to believe he may be available. He hit .216 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 39 Triple-A games, and was batting .301 with one homer and 13 RBIs in 35 games in Double-A through Sunday. Obviously, the Marlins don't want to pay that price. According to a Florida-based report, they are using major-league ham-and-egg relievers Nate Bump, Justin Wayne, Blaine Neal and minor-league lefty Ryan Snare as the bait. The Mets would probably pick up the majority of Benitez's contract, as they did with Roberto Alomar. Benitez is owed $6.75 million this season. Earlier this week, special assistant to the GM Bruce Benedict was dispatched to Chicago to watch the Cubs and Marlins. No front-runner exists for Benitez, as the Red Sox, Yankees, Royals, Giants, Mariners and Cubs all remain potential suitors. The Mets aren't sure whether the Yankees are truly interested or if they're covering themselves per orders of owner George Steinbrenner. i love how they say Adrian Gonzalez may be involved and then completely go back on their statement all in the same article... we arent gonna give up anyone that great for a 1/2 year rental
July 10, 200323 yr same reason you responded to the thread Ramp owned Josh Once again The NY Post loves to post false information, They are always posting these rumors and then they prove to be false.
July 10, 200323 yr It's probably not false information. All the article said was the Mets plan to ASK For Gonzalez...Beinfest will(or should) laugh in their face when they make that attempt.
July 10, 200323 yr This way I've said the Mets wanted to included Burnitz in the deal to get a top prospect from the fish. The problem is how much are the Mets willing to take of both salaries and how much do the Marlins think there in it, to make such a big commit toward effecting there future.
July 10, 200323 yr I dont think we should give up Adrian but we do need a bullpen guy. Cant we give something else? I want to see how the FO deals wih this...
July 10, 200323 yr give them Hooper and Medrano or...something like that * dont shoot me!* cant give hooper, he is replacing luis.......maybe they will bite on stratton :mischief2 , doubt it...remember, we have jason stokes, who is doing better than adrian,....we'll see what happens
July 10, 200323 yr Nobody can touch Adrian untill we can see what he can do at the ML level, most likely in September. Stokes is the fall back on Adrian, and he is untouchable. I like Stokes for some reason, plus he was already with the Mets and they let him walk. Hooper has promise. He had a SICK ST, hit well over . 350 The prospects that were originally rumored were probably perfectly correct. They won't get anymore than that.
July 11, 200323 yr http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=3753 LOL the first guy thinks they can get not only Gonzalez for Benitez but Wayne too.
