January 4, 200521 yr Goldberg takes over Stern's slot on WQAM By Tom Jicha TV/Radio Writer Posted January 4 2005 WQAM is dropping The Hammer on Howard Stern. As of Monday, Stern's show will disappear from the sports station (560-AM), replaced by a new program hosted by Hank Goldberg, who moves from afternoon drive. Unlike most morning drive programs, Goldberg will sign on at 7 a.m. Goldberg, a notorious night owl and club hopper, said there is no way he could be up early enough to be on the air at the normal 6 a.m. starting time. Goldberg, who said he expects a hefty raise to become a slave of the alarm clock, added, "There isn't enough money to get me to do [a 6 a.m. program]." Goldberg's move will necessitate changes throughout the schedule. Jim Mandich is the logical choice to take over for Goldberg from 4 to 7 p.m., but this would necessitate coming up with a replacement for the former Dolphin's current 2-4 p.m. slot. However, this shift is far less important than afternoon drive. WQAM in all likelihood will run the Sporting News Network overnight show as a lead-in to Goldberg. WQAM general manager Greg Reed declined to comment on the potential changes. Conversations are taking place, he said, but nothing has been finalized. Replacing Stern with a program that ends at 10 a.m. also would appease Neil Rogers. The station's biggest generator of ratings and revenue has been vocal in expressing displeasure about having to start his program whenever Stern feels like ending his. Some days, this is 11 a.m. or later. This is the second time in less than a year Stern has been without an outlet in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market. He was dropped by WBGG (105.9-FM) in February in anticipation of the Federal Communications Commission crackdown on indecency after the Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction contretemps. WPBZ (FM 103.1) restored Stern to the Palm Beach market in July. The following month, WQAM announced it was picking up the syndicated program. Stern shocked the industry in October, announcing he is abandoning the broadcast band for Sirius satellite radio when his contract expires at the end of 2005. The fact that he will be leaving in less than a year undoubtedly was a factor in WQAM making its move now. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-gol...ports-headlines I waited until the article came out to post it. WQAM is beginning to make changes. Stern is gone and Goldberg moving to the morning slot. Where will Mandich will end up? The new afternoon show? ....Stay tuned!
January 4, 200521 yr Stern is gone because he is on satellite though - this isnt like QAM is making a controversial move here. It is based on necessity. And Goldberg is a 'club hopper'? Doesnt he wear depends? Shouldnt he be in bed? Besides, old people always get up early as hell...what is he talking about?
January 4, 200521 yr Author Hopefully this opens the door for Boog to get a radio show of his own in the afternoon. That 2-4 pm slot would be perfect for him.
January 4, 200521 yr As long as Fat Hank and that Marlin-hating POS Mandich is doing afternoon drive time the Fish will never get a fair shake on QAM. What the station needs to do if they are serious about retaining the Marlins is keep the drunk where he is and bring in a real baseball guy to do afternoon drive time. Anything short of that would be a slap in the face.

If Mandich doesn't leave, then he and Boog can fight it out for the Afternoon Drive Slot. The Big O is a big 0 in the ratings and WQAM doesn't want him hosting nights anymore. Goldie is a choice, but he must be paired to be effective. The Boog and Goldie Show anyone?

Fat Hank won't last getting up that early, so he could be out the door with Mandich....IF all this takes place along with Boog getting his own show. QAM could be finally the home the Marlins have been looking for....agree??
January 4, 200521 yr Author Minervini is on 790?!? What time? 647570 11 am - 1 pm http://www.790espnradio.com/main.cfm?do=shows&item=3
January 4, 200521 yr Author BTW, Madich is supposed to meet with Reed (WQAM's GM) this week to talk about his future with WQAM. Mandich can walk away from WQAM at any time, he is under contract for Dolphins for 2 years more. If the Dolphins go to 790, Mandich has to follow to call the games, but his talk show could be ending on WQAM. WQAM will not keep an ad for 790 on its air.
January 4, 200521 yr Author Projected Lineups as of next Monday 560 WQAM 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM Hank Goldberg (local) 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Neil Rogers (local, non-sports) 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Mandich's current show? (local) 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM TBD (local) 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Rotating Host/Play-By-Play (local) 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM The Ed Kaplan Show? (local) 2:00 AM - 7:00 AM Sporting News Radio (SNR Network) I don't see Mandich leaving his current routine for the chance. He may not be with WQAM come next week for all we know. I also doubt that WQAM will pick up Sporting News Radio's shows (Tim Brando from 3-6 PM, Afternoon Edition from 6-7 PM, and Arnie Spanier from 7-10 PM) in those hours when it has Boog, Goldie and other hosts it can bring in. 790 ESPN Radio 9:00PM?- 1:00AM? ESPN GameNight (ESPN Network) 1:00AM?- 6:00AM? All Night with Todd Wright (ESPN Network) 6:00AM?- 8:00AM? Mike and Mike in the Morning (ESPN Network) 8:00AM?- 11:00AM? The Cup O' Joe Show with Joe Rose (local) 11:00AM?- 1:00PM? Mini in the Midday with Craig Minervini and Jason Solodkin (local) 1:00PM?- 4:00PM? The Dan Patrick Show (ESPN Network) 4:00PM?- 7:00PM? The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz (local) 7:00PM?- 9:00PM? Toasted Sports with Marc Eisenberg (local) WQAM has alot of time, Marlins/Canes/Panthers programming may be the remedy to the local sports media problem.
January 4, 200521 yr Author Hank seems to have a co-host on his show right now.....Kim Bokamper it sounds like.
January 4, 200521 yr Author Hank and Bokamper talking about broadcasting sports and Sirius having the NFL rights.
January 4, 200521 yr Author Everything is coming how I thought it would. Hank ripped into the Dolphins. The 790 sign at PPS did not seem like a sign of loyalty according to Hank. Hank is captain obvious. :lol
January 4, 200521 yr Author Note to WQAM: Please pair Hank, Orlando and KimBo together, they sound really good talking football together. That way you could have the Football limited to some hours instead of almost ALL hours.
January 4, 200521 yr Author Hank jokes about bringing his 2 strippers on the morning show on monday :lol What a perv :lol
January 4, 200521 yr Author The Sun-Sentinel's Ira Winderman and Bumardino will stay as regular guest. Hank throws peace bone to Joe Rose over on 790.
January 4, 200521 yr There's an old saying, "you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig". As long as it's still Fat Hank, Kaplan, Bokamper, the drunk and the Big O (who has tried to undo his nasty, venomous anti-Marlins stance over the last season or so but is still a football guy at heart) the station will continue to be anti-Marlins and anti-baseball and not a good home for the Fish.

There is no good home right now, but things change. WQAM is changing, this is the time for the Marlins to get their media foot in the door and start developing some shows on WQAM of their own.
January 4, 200521 yr I suppose you could call this a step in the right direction, a reversal of sorts......but still a far cry from having Joe Rose in the morning. I won't listen to fat Hank either. I like the idea of giving Boog a show.

That is the time most decide whether to head out to the ballpark or not. Boog needs to be given this show. If not Boog, then some Pro-Marlins host who will be a Teal Cheerleader.
January 4, 200521 yr Author eddie k. is no marlin hater though. i don't think the big O is either. 647735 After mid-2003 they have seemed to tone down the hating of the organization. Kaplan liked to poke at Redman and Beinfest while the Big O spewed crap about management and the team folding.
January 4, 200521 yr because it seemed like it was going to happen. the truth is nobody knows more or likes baseball more than eddie k. besides i've had the luck of meeting him personally and he's a great guy.
