2005 Promotional Schedule

MIAMI -- Spring Training is swiftly approaching and the Florida Marlins are ready to lure in their fans with an abundance of promotional giveaways at Dolphins Stadium when the regular season begins.

"Get Hooked" is the team's tag line for the 2005 season.

Considering the offseason acquisitions of slugger Carlos Delgado and pitchers Al Leiter, Antonio Alfonseca, Todd Jones, John Riedling and Jim Mecir, the team has the makeup to contend for a playoff spot.

Along with the product on the field, the Marlins have assembled a long list of promotions for 66 of their 81 home games.

Beginning with Opening Day on April 5 against Atlanta at Dolphins Stadium, the Marlins will start their handouts. At the opener, fans will receive a 2005 Marlins schedule magnet, courtesy of Papa John's Pizza. Following the game will be a fireworks show.

"We are excited about the promotional schedule planned for the upcoming season," Marlins vice president of marketing Sean Flynn said. "We have a lot of fun and innovative promotions scheduled that will complement the top-level baseball being played on the field."

Among the promotions will be "Josh Beckett Rapala Fishing Lure Night" on May 7. There will be mini-bobblehead giveaways. Another new concept is stringing together a series of Friday night promotions where fans will receive pieces of a puzzle, which when filled out, will be a team collage.

The Marlins have 48 giveaway nights planned, including: McFarlane Two-Player Figurine Set Night (May 21 and Sept. 3), Miguel Cabrera Russian Nesting Doll Night (Sept. 17) presented by Kraft, and Carlos Delgado Youth Jersey Day (April 24) presented by The Real Yellow Pages from BellSouth.

At designated games throughout the season, the Marlins will celebrate the ethnic diversity of South Florida with "Heritage Nights." The first, Dominican Heritage Night, will take place on April 22. It will be followed by nights celebrating Paraguayan (May 11), Cuban (May 20), Jewish (May 29), Asian-American (June 7), Venezuelan (July 5), Argentinean (July 9), Colombian (July 10), Peruvian (July 28), Bolivian (Aug. 9), Ecuadorian (Aug. 10), Brazilian (Sept. 4) and Mexican (Sept. 16) heritage.

New this season, the Marlins have increased the quantity of items they will distribute on giveaway nights. Giveaways scheduled for all ages will be distributed to the first 12,500 fans through the gates, and kids giveaways will be distributed to the first 7,500 children (12 and younger).

Marlins full-season ticket holders are guaranteed giveaways when they attend a game. Dates and giveaways are subject to change.

Just a couple of observations, but the fact that we're giving away an AJ Burnett item, and a Jeff Conine item suggests to me that these guys are just about locks to go through the season with us.

I know that it's an odd way of looking at things, but you have to believe that we're not seriously interested in actively trying to trade either of them if we're paying to put out little plastic likenesses of them.

Last year Brad Penny was traded before "Brad Penny Rubix Cube Night" and they gave them all out to the season ticket holders and towards the end of the season to get rid of them.

Moral of the story: free fan giveaways have nothing to do with the intentions of the FO.
