Oil Change

Featured Replies

I just saw an investigative special on NBC 5 in Palm Beach (up in FAU). They say that you don't have to change your oil every 3 months. This was news to me--because even my auto-intelligent cousin says that's right.

But they asked a couple of experts--and you don't really have to change your car more than once a year, or once every 10-12,000 miles...

After 5k miles car performance and efficiency goes down a bunch. I still changed mine at 3,000-3,500 miles back when I had a car.

With regular motor oil, I can notice the difference after 5K miles. You can get more out of it, but you must change the filter at 5K.

A pure synthetic can let you go as much as 30K between changes, but you still need to change the filter every 7.5 - 10K miles.

Every 4-5k probably best time to get it changed...besides not like oil changes cost very much or you could do it yourself

it's great to have a good mechanic!

I change mine religiously every 3,000 miles... that's why both vehicles I had are still running with 300,000 and 150,000 miles on them.

And don't trust a mechanic to change your oil. There's too many shortcuts he could take.

Seriously, I've never tried it my self, but it seems quite easy...

Go under the car, pop open the oil tube, drain the dirty oil, close the chamber.

Prop the hood, open the oil tube, set a funnel, and pour oil...

Am I right?

And by the way...300,000 miles is ABSURD.

You are my new hero.

Must be the dodge Al Bundy owned. He hit over a million on that one. :mischief

You forgot changing the filter. Do that in between cycling out the old and new oil.

There's nothing to it, you just need the tools (which aren't many at all) and to have someone experienced to help you the first couple tries.

And the car I had that made it 300,000 miles (before I sold it).... American baby. 1982 Ford F-100.

Go figure...I used to have an Explorer...Now I have a Monte Carlo :( And I've crapped it up a good bit...Only 45,000 miles though.

Anyway, my dad owned three Goodyear auto shops for about 10 years, and he has never shown me anything about the diagnostics of a car--except how to change a tire...
