July 17, 200323 yr So then...following your logic..... What if a good player has an off year? What if Lowell was hitting .250 right now. Heck, what if he was putting up numbers like last year instead? Then what do you do? Also, why is Sea Bass still here then? And by the way, the FO never even hinted that this was a one year "trial period" for the players. According to them this was a way that they, as a low-payroll team, could afford players while incenting them to overperform. If you think this was some type of test year or anything other than a way to save some cash, you are way, way out there. Sea Bass has been hitting well for someone who was supposed to provide no offense in the preseason previews. When you sign someone to a one year deal, it is a trial period. Do I really have to explain this to you?
July 17, 200323 yr Yeah, you do have to explain it to me when your roster is filled with the best young talent in the league. This isn't the Mets' roster we are talking about here. The Marlins' roster is filled to the gills with players who were highly touted in the minors, highly touted when they got called up, showed signs of brilliance in the past, and who now have just enough experience on the MLB level to start producing. So then you use one year deals to incite them to play great, so that if it works and they play great you can't afford to re-sign them when the season is over? Kind of counter-intuitive, doncha' think?
July 17, 200323 yr Who says we can't afford all of them? Castillo and DLee look to be the only casualties of this, Castillo has had hip problems and DLee is self-explanatory. What's the problem? We keep everyone else except Pudge and Urbina.
July 17, 200323 yr Again, they went with 1-year deals because it was right at the time. None of these guys deserved $5+ Mill per for 3-5 years, so they signed them for $3 Mill and 1-year to be safe, and make sure they weren't wasting money. Well, we're f***ed because of it, but it wasn't exactly the wrong thing to do at all...
July 17, 200323 yr This group was underperforming. We have the minor league system to replace them. Stokes can replace DLee and Hooper can replace Castillo next year if need be.
July 17, 200323 yr This group was underperforming. We have the minor league system to replace them. Stokes can replace DLee and Hooper can replace Castillo next year if need be. Oh god, Rampo is going to jump on your back now...
July 17, 200323 yr Oh god, Rampo is going to jump on your back now... Bring it on. Hooper has been said to be the next Eckstein.
July 17, 200323 yr Bring it on. Hooper has been said to be the next Eckstein. so has Jesus Madrano Hooper blows a** and i hate him i hope he is never on this team(big club)
July 17, 200323 yr Haven't heard of Medrano. ASK MIKE! Updated June 10 Q: What are the Marlins' plans for Kevin Hooper? A: Hooper is the kind of player who grows on you, but he's only hitting in the .260s at Triple-A Albuquerque this year. Marlins development types believe Hooper can play either second or short because his arm is stronger than you'd expect for his modest size. He'll probably break in later this year or early next year in a utility role, but don't sell him short. Many believe he's the next David Eckstein.
July 17, 200323 yr Cape, I was the one who asked him that. Me and Rampo had an arguement a way long time ago about Hoop and I wrote that to him...
July 17, 200323 yr Bring it on. Hooper has been said to be the next Eckstein. You say that like it's a good thing.
July 17, 200323 yr ive seen that article plenty of times and i still think he is garbage although my boy Madrano is sucking major a** too
July 17, 200323 yr This group was underperforming. We have the minor league system to replace them. Stokes can replace DLee and Hooper can replace Castillo next year if need be. Yeah, keep em' coming up from the minors. Nothing better than shopping existing MLB talent and bringing up the kids. Look how well it's worked over the last four or five years! And it's not going to be just Castillo and Lee. I'd say 4 out of 5 of the current Marlin starting 9 are having better than average years at the very least. If you want em' all to stay you might as well write a check and send it off to Loria right now, start the slush-fund up. I'll be the first to admit that Billy Beane is an arrogant preek, but signing youngsters to long-term deals before they gouge you is the way to go.

I'll be the first to admit that Billy Beane is an arrogant preek, but signing youngsters to long-term deals before they gouge you is the way to go. Little late for that, this team isn't exactly young anymore.
July 17, 200323 yr Little late for that, this team isn't exactly young anymore. Yeah, but I remember them being young (and cheap) about 6 months ago when they all signed their cocktail napkin contracts.
July 17, 200323 yr Yeah, but I remember them being young (and cheap) about 6 months ago when they all signed their cocktail napkin contracts. Billy Beane signs them to long term contracts out of the minors. That would have been 5-6 years ago for this group except Castillo who would be 8 years ago I believe.
July 17, 200323 yr It doesn't matter, I know that they could of been signed for a lot less on long-term deals last off-season. That's similar enough to Beane's strategy for me.
July 17, 200323 yr You distort the truth for your arguement Fillet, the only guys in danger of leaving are Castillo, Pudge, and Urbina. They are the only free agents, the rest are arbitration eligible and can be signed without having to go to arbitration.

July 17, 200323 yr Zito came up from the minors in 2000, he has been signed since when? He was signed long-term before the 2002 season. He had already accumulated 300+ innings in the majors by then. I hardly consider that being signed "right out of the minors"
July 17, 200323 yr 2 years out of the minors, we are what 4-5 years removed from the minors. They are not free agents remember that.

Madrano is looking great Hooper is doing much better, Medrano can go to AAA and Hooper come up into the majors next year if we lose Luis. Hopefully we can keep Luis and leave them both down there for a little longer.
