July 17, 200321 yr Unfortunately I can't make Friday or Saturday's games...I'll be there Sunday for sure in full force and most likely at least 4 or 5 more games on the homestand...

July 17, 200321 yr I haven't been to a Marlins game since the end of the 2001 season. I live in Portland now, and I haven't even had a chance to see Dontrelle pitch yet on TV yet. Christ, niether TBS nor WGN showed his starts, but I get to see tons of Braves and Cubs/Sox games otherwise (whoopee!). Oh, and apparently Portland's "home team" is the Mariners - whom I hate almost as much as I hate the Braves (they're both choke-meisters, but the Ms are simply a worse team). I'd rather watch As games. I'll be in So Fla in September, and I'll catch at least 2 games against the Mets and/or Phills. Hopefully I can see Dontrelle, and hopefully the games will be part of a playoff push.
July 17, 200321 yr I'm there Sunday, Sec. 106, Row 7, Seats 13-14. And depending on what time I get out of the office, I may be there tomorrow night as well.
July 17, 200321 yr Dontrelle's start on Sunday will be televised by WGN. I thought everyone up there loved the Mariners Maybe the Marlins and PAX can get together and do a superstation package together.
July 17, 200321 yr People here like the Ms I guess (at least that's what the posters in the sports bars would have you believe). But if they can't even put more than 6000 butts in the seats for opening night for our AAA team (great downtown stadium, high-quality minor-league ball, and they only draw well on cheap beer night), how the heck are we going to support an MLB team? Answer: we're not. At least not yet. The big deal for tonight's Beavers game is Mullet Appreciation Night (half-price admission if you have a mullet...any surprise when a guy named Veeck runs the stadium?); also Phil Nevin is here for a rehab start. Whoopee!
July 17, 200321 yr I saw that. There is no reason for Portland to have a team. you can buy a $16 train ticket and ride roundtrip right up to Safeco. Washington will land the team most likely.
July 17, 200321 yr "There is no reason for Portland to have a team. you can buy a $16 train ticket and ride roundtrip right up to Safeco." Safeco is a beautiful stadium, and the Ms are great (in the regular season). But it would be nice to walk to a game after work instead of driving 3 hours. Not to mention tickets to a game there are pricey and hard to come by and you have to sit with nitwit yuppies who're rooting for the Ms. Boo. GO FISHIES!

OK, by that mentality, then why does Washington deserve a team? Baltimore is closer to DC then Portland is to Seattle.

Portland has a minor league team that is not drawing well. Washington/Northern Virginia can support the team. BTW, Baltimore and Washington are about 40-50 miles apart.

It took me an hour and a half to get to Baltimore, only because there was a bit of a jam leaving DC on the beltway. I wouldn't mind DC getting a team, but honestly I think it would be better off in the Carribean.
July 17, 200321 yr Carribean is big stretch, baseball is having trouble deciding to put it in DC and you want it in the carribean? Maybe in the future, but doubtful, the carribean leagues are having problems drawing. DC needs a team, they have the NFL, NBA, and NHL, MLB is missing. We need the team that represents the sport to lawmakers again. It helps alot. DC Baseball Viability Study
July 18, 200321 yr Carribean is big stretch, baseball is having trouble deciding to put it in DC and you want it in the carribean? Maybe in the future, but doubtful, the carribean leagues are having problems drawing. DC needs a team, they have the NFL, NBA, and NHL, MLB is missing. We need the team that represents the sport to lawmakers again. It helps alot. The lawmakers have the Orioles. And look, I've been lobbying to DC many a time. They have no time to go to games, the only time they go to games is when they can if they have teams at home during district work periods. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, one of our Congresswomen from Miami District 18, goes to Marlins games only because she is a die hard fan (she even had friendly bets going with other congressional officers during the Marlins' run in the 97 playoffs, winning all three ). The members of Congress and the rest of the lawmakers in DC would be rooting for their home teams, why would they want to go for a DC team? It wouldn't happen. Even then, DC is mostly an African-American city. Baseball is dying among the African-Americans, while b-ball and football are rising to unheard of levels. They wouldn't go to baseball games. The Carribean, on the other hand, has been playing baseball for just as long as the US. The Cuban Professional League got started 4 years (give or take a season) after the National League was founded. For those keeping track at home, that made the league older than the Junior Circuit. Why does Canada get two teams and the cradle of the sport get one? Canada's sport is hockey. Canada's second sport is football. Baseball is third at best, and it shows by Expos attendance. Toronto attendance isn't that hot either, people don't go to their games until the Maple Leafs' season is over. Baseball, meanwhile, is religion in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Even with communications almost completely locked down between Cuba and the US the cubans that are still on the island follow the major leagues. Obviously a team won't be there until Fidel dies and communism is gone (shouldn't be that long, hes getting really old). So that knocks Cuba out, how about the Dominican Republic? A serious number of stars from the Majors are native of the Dominican. The best pitcher IMO (Pedro), the most talented position player IMO (Vlad the Impaler). But the Dominican Republic is one of the poorer nations on this planet, and maybe the rest of the owners might be reluctant to put a team in a country where the US government doesn't truly trust the other country's government. So that leaves Puerto Rico. They have had pretty good attendance numbers to watch so-so games far. I mean honestly, they went for a while but Montreal isn't their team. Why would they go to support a team that isn't theres? But if you put a team their permanently, I guarantee you they will come. Sell out every day. Build an upper deck and sell out still. A new stadium would be better, that place is a bandbox (I'm a pitching kind of guy) but its good nonetheless. And Owners can't really argue with the idea, the team has already played there for a while and giving it to them permanently would only bring more support. Plus add the fact that Puerto Rico is a territory of the US (much like Canada :lol ), so it isn't really that big of a move. I bet if you experiment and give that team to the boriquas for 5 seasons, you'll love the results.
July 18, 200321 yr Los boricuas are drawing 14,000 per game, just 4,000 more than Montreal is this season. PR has a better economy than the Dominican, etc. Washington can support the team, I want them there so we can have a another southern team in the NL. The Braves, Astros and Marlins are the only Southern NL teams. (The Cards are in the midwest)
July 18, 200321 yr bought my tickets monday, and flirtted a little with the cute girl that sold me the tickets. the 2nd half has been good to me before it even started

The Braves, Astros and Marlins are the only Southern NL teams. (The Cards are in the midwest) Like I said, I believe when the Expos are permanently given to the Puerto Ricans, then the attendance will show.  I'll put it this way: I do like watching baseball games that don't involve the Marlins or the Canes or my high school team at all. I watch them and enjoy them just because it is baseball. But after a while, you have to have something to cling to so that you keep coming back. And the Puerto Rican people can't cling to the Expos because it is not their team. Are you going to keep watching someone time after a time even if it isn't your team? I wouldn't. And the Expos are already 68% latin based (17 out of 25 for the mathematically challenged such as odom and others who will remain nameless). Moving them to DC wouldn't get too much, Blacks don't like latins and latins don't like blacks unless they are latin blacks (which is an oxymoron, in Cuba at least there is no black and white everyone is simply cuban). Would a black dominated community want to go watch a latin dominated baseball team? Hell fricking no. And baseball isn't the big draw it used to be among blacks. You are ignoring the population totals of DC, I think the numbers saying that DC will have a big draw are inflated.
