Delgado Returning

JUPITER, Fla. -- Barring any last-minute setbacks in batting practice, Carlos Delgado is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut for the Marlins on Monday night.

The power-hitting first baseman has missed the Marlins' first five Grapefruit League games because of a sore left elbow. He did play last Tuesday in an exhibition against the University of Miami, going hitless in two at-bats with a strikeout.

Delgado took batting practice on Sunday, and was encouraged enough to give playing Monday a try.

"I plan to go with him unless he tells me it's not all right," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said.

The Marlins have a split-squad doubleheader set for Monday, with a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Orioles at Fort Lauderdale followed by a 7:05 p.m. ET start versus the Dodgers at Roger Dean Stadium.

Delgado will be available for the game with the Dodgers.

McKeon said Delgado's batting practice wasn't overwhelming, but that is to be expected this early in spring.

"He did all right," McKeon said. "I don't expect to see him crush it out of the park. He swung the bat all right. He felt good. He will come out tomorrow and try it. If he feels all right, and he comes out and the elbow feels good, he will be in there."

The Marlins could certainly use Delgado's bat. After losing, 5-1, to the Cardinals on Sunday, Florida is now 1-4 in Grapefruit League games and has scored eight runs total in five games.

Excellent. I'm planning to be there with my 2 boys. Should be exciting.

Today was a bit disappointing in that Cabrera, Pierre, Gonzalez, LoDuca and Delgado all sat.

Maybe he can give this team the spark that they need. Sure its spring training, but you'd love to see them win a few more of these games. :mischief

Don't rush him; it's S.T., who cares.

This has, however, shown how lack-luster our offense can be without Delgado out there...

Indicative of our offense without Delgado. Pathetic.

8 runs in 5 games? Sounds like our entire 2004 run production against the Expos and Pirates.

Good news indeed.

And I wouldn't worry about our spring training record; the Yankees are winless in spring training so far.

it would be nice to finally see the big guy out there but i agree its spring training no need to rush this guy, imagine we rush him and it cost us the season or a long stint on the DL
