At worst, he's a good left-handed reliever/spot starter out of the pen. It seems the Dodgers only want a catcher in return, and with Willy, Treanor, Defilice, and Jorgy all logjammed behind Lo Duca, maybe we can part with Willy or Treanor for Ishii. Who knows, maybe we can convince the Dodgers to eat a bit of Ishii's contract, which isn't horrible ($3.23 Million for this year, with 2 years remaining). Also, maybe we can talk the Dodgers into taking back Encarnacion in the deal. How amusing would it be if we can get the Dodgers to take back Encarnacion because they wanted one of Lo Duca's backups.

He reminds me of Victor Zamrano. He walks way too many batters. He doesnt compensate with strikeouts. Putting that many runners on base is not a good thing. I dont care how he makes up for it. I say let the Mets have him. Between him and Zamrano, lets see how well they do.

 

On the other hand, if it only cost us someone like DeFelice, then I say fine but ONLY for the pen and as a long reliever. But absolutely not for Willy.

They want a solid back-up plan. They want a good bench. They want someone who can play if Navarro can't for any reason. Paul Bako's better than Treanor or DiFelice. Willingham has the potential to be good, but so does Navarro.

I prefer Valdez over that guy. Ive heard alot of crappy stuff about him. And for what hes worth....But itll be a good way to piss off the Mets.

My thinking is that Willy won't make the 25-man roster, and with Lo Duca given a 3-year extension, I don't see Willy in the Marlins' future plans - even as a utility player. However, he's a pretty good catching prospect, and I'm hoping maybe we can package Willy and Encarnacion together for Ishii (and maybe a prospect). That way, we'd actually save money and add a needed left-hander to our pen. Perisho and Hagarty are not enough IMO. Plus, next year when we lose both Leiter and Valdez, we'll have a good left-handed option under contract to join the 5-man rotation.

 

IMO Ishii is better than Valdez - even though Ishii walks way more batters - because his ERA is consistently lower than Valdez and his record is not as shaky as Valdez's record on the road (although Ishii's numbers are WAY better during the first half of the season than in the second half). Plus, it would be nice to undercut the Mets and leave them with a lesser option for their rotation.

 

I know some people on this board are in love with Willy, but I just don't see him cracking the roster - even if we trade Encarnacion. Might as well give him a better chance to smell the big leagues and bolster our bullpen.

Ishii sucks. Had a 4.71 ERA last year and you want to offer the Dodgers Willingham, Encarnacion, and possibly another prospect?

 

There is no need for Ishii and if there was I'm sure that knowing DePodesta and the type of player he likes, Willingham, and Willingham alone could probably land you Ishii.

I'm WISHING they'd let us include Encarnacion in the deal - and maybe the DODGERS would throw in a prospect. After all, we're trying to dump Encarnacion on the Pirates anyway - and likely for nothing. In the end, we'd save money.

 

Oh, and Valdez had a 5.19 ERA last year. Ishii had a 3.87 ERA in 2003, and Valdez hasn't had an ERA under 4.00 since 1999. Ishii was also 10-4 before last year's all-star break. My only major concern with Ishii is his penchant for walks - but it's not as if Valdez doesn't have his faults (i mean, I read a Herald article today that the Marlins might keep Moehler on the 25-man roster to spell Valdez anyway).

 

I wouldn't mind seeing Ishii over Valdez in our rotation, but I'm not sure if I like a 5-man rotation consisting of 3 lefties. However, I'd definitely like to see Ishii added to our bullpen.

First off, it's not too late. We can get Ishii as a spot starter/left-handed reliever for Willy and Encarnacion (my extremely optimistic guess). I think Willy is damn good, but he really has no future on our team and it'd be worth it IMO to get a dependable spot start on the 25-man roster.

 

Second, I'd have Valdez start off the season in the 5th slot, and probably do nothing with the bench, because hopefully we'd send Encarnacion to the Dodgers. Also, this would save us money, so we'd have some cash to get a late season acquisition.

 

I'd probably keep the rosters the same, until Hagarty proves his worth. If he does nothing, I'd send Hagarty back to his original rule 5 team, and keep Ishii and Perisho as our left-handed relievers, and call up a bat from AAA/AA.

 

Finally, I think a spot starter is critical - and even though we seem to be in a better position this year with Moehler, I'd rather have Ishii in that role so we can avoid calling up the Logan Kensings/Justin Waynes of the world (no offense to Logan or Justin, but they're just not ready and consistent enough to depend on right now).

damn. Hopefully Ishii walks a lot of Marlins...I think he's a good addition to the Mets, but I guess we'll see.

Ishii will be a good pitcher to hit against in the NL East. He's replacing Steve Trachsel.

I know im going to get killed for syaing this, but if one of our pithcers does go down there are always pitchers floating around that can spot start. People like frank castillo. Then theres people in our own system such as kensing, who can always come up for a few games. The problem with not having a set spot starter is in situations like last year vs. the cubs in the middle of the pennant race. I wouldnt lose anybody for ishii. hes overhyped and too expensive.
