Gas prices aren't helping those of us who aren't close to the stadium. Gas is up to 2.35 cheapest near me. Nonetheless, I will do my best to make it to 5-7 games, even though I'm 1h or so away. Just hope gas doesn't get too bad.

Gas prices should not be an excuse. The prices are higher everywhere. That excuse just makes Miami fans look bad. 19 K is awful this early into the season on a Friday night.

Don't tell me gas isn't an excuse when I'm dropping an extra thirty bucks this weekend to go to games. Thanks.

The point was, "high gas prices" can't be used as an excuse about why attendance may be low, because high gas prices are all across the country, and would affect attendance everywhere.

Yes, but the rest of the country, on average, doesn't have to drive an hour or so to get to a weeknight game through oncoming traffic, not exactly the best thing for fuel efficiency. The gas isn't a main excuse, it's another thing on the long list of reasons of why working people can't make games regurlarly Monday-Friday. Expect a big crowd tonight.

i've seen plenty of nats coverage when they were winning against the phils

735045

Nats beating the Phils is surprising.

Marlins beating the Nats, not at all.

National shows cater to the national audience. And this may come as a shocker, the nation does not care about the Marlins! And with attendance down around 19k again tonight you wonder if even S. Fla cares.

The Nats (Expos) just don't generate a lot of excitement. Last year we opened with them. We are still ahead of last year's total attendance after 4 games:

2004 - 113,981

2005 - 116,157

However, that will likely change after tonight as there was 46K for the Saturday game last year, and we'll be doing good to get over 30K tonight.

You're right we started with the Nats last year for 3 games. This year we had the Braves for 3 games, they are our 2nd biggest rival, behind the Mutts, and they only generated 3K more fans? Also when you take into consideration attendance is up league wide, and extra 800 fans or so a night is not a huge increase. Plus anyone who was at opening day will say what they said the attendance was surely didn't look it.

I am just saying, before the Marlins get national playtime the locals have to show they care, and finishing in the bootom third of attendance every year, in the market they are in, doesn't help matters.

i know from knowing the guys personally that they do not give a crap what BBTN says about them and im sure the other teams feel the same way. the whole 2003 season when i was working with them they liked not being talked about and they dont care if they bomb them or anything. let BBTN not talk about us, lord knows they will be in OCTOBER.

I'm just giving my personal excuse for not going. You going to pay for my gas? I'm not gonna spend 20 bucks to drive up there, 24 more on tickets, and another 20 on food. Not everyone can spend money like that. How many games have you gone to?

And is gas any cheaper in the rest of the country? That's the sort of excuse that gives Marlins fans a bad name.

735091

I never said it was. Some of us aren't rich, some of us aren't located next to the stadium. How many games have you been to?

thats a good excuse for a "fan"

south florida is pathetic when it comes to sports.

it is not a sports town nor will it ever been one of the best.

football is supported no matter what, despite them being the worst sports team in south florida(tied with panbters at least)

noone cares about the fish and the heat unless they win.

Again, not everyone can afford to just go to games and blow 80 bucks. I never once used solely gas as an excuse, I said it contributed to other issues. I've never been to a football game in my life, but the Heat games twice when they were losing. I've gone to many Marlins games, so it seems your incorrect.

alright smart ass but u arent the only one in south florida

735259

No really? I thought I was. :o Who woulda guessed, god your so smart :notworthy

Idiot.

A typical Marlins outing:

Parking : $10

2 Outfield Reserve Tix: $24

A couple cokes and dogs: $18

Cost of gas for norther fans: $5-$15

----

So an average night out would cost about $57-$67 bucks for a northern fan. They move south that number will go up. I also did not include cost of programs, or any other frivilous things that people spend on.

Now no one take this the wrong way, but I feel the demographic the Marlins target, just can't afford more than 4-5 outings a year. People just don't have money to allot $500-$600 a year on baseball. The cuban fans base, the fan base the Marlins are suppose to have, just don't have the money as a whole to do it. Yes Miami is a big market, but the fans don't have the money for it, because I think most fans will spend on the Dolphins and now the Heat before they spend on the Marlins, that is just how I see it.
