Josh Beckett and AJ Burnett..

Do you think that Burnett has more to prove now that Josh is off to a stellar start? I don't know their relationship, or how competitive they are--but AJ must be getting a little fired up, methinks. I doubt he wants to be shown up by his younger counterpart :)

Maybe over the course of the season, their competitive attitudes will lead to a plethora of wins, and low ERA for the Marlins!

I am correct!

I've long believed the dynamic duo are motivated by different things.

AJ is married with kids, hence his primary motivation (and not taking anything away regarding his desire to excel on the field or his competitiveness or his desire to be the best pitcher he can be) is providing for his family, hence his desire to cash in on a BIG (read Yankees, etc.) contract. If it weren't the case there would be something wrong with the guy. Those of you with kids know exactly what I'm talking about. It's human nature.

AJ also knows from experience (TJ) that his gift is fragile, which furthwer motivates him to cash in while he can.

Josh on the otherhand, not being in the same boat and without free agency looming on the horizon (2006) is motivated more purely by the desire to succeed and by doing so, defining himself.

Both have their unique reasons for wanting to succeed this year and if things work out, we as fans, and the team as a whole will benefit.

growing up together and living under the cloud of underperforming superstars, i think they both will come out this year and i think that the success that jb is having early on will rub off onto aj and then aj will see josh doing well and then he'll wanna do better than josh, it will be a great compitition...its time

aj has always been considered the better pitcher even with josh's 2003 postseason.

that may be changing. yes we are all motivated by money, but thats not to say that some professional athletes realize that 80 million 60 million really means little in the grand scheme of providing for your family.

however, they both will be stellar this season, josh proves he is on the elite level for sure, something he is doing already this year.

I think there will be healthy friendly competition. Theyre both going to put forth their best. It is true they have different motivations, but in sports, one motivation is to succeed and be the best.

Not always. Coming out of HS Josh was considered the next Nolan Ryan/ Clemens.

he's 24 right now... he's got 28 wins...if he gets 15 wins a season for the next 15 years he'll fnish with 151. ..wow, makes you think and really appreciate the roger clemens, greg maddux's and john smoltz and glavines...

this game is softened by middle relievers and pitch counts..i like mark wiley he goes with feel not just by stats...

I think our pitching will keep getting better because everybody is going to want to one up the guy before them. I think this was a main reason behind the team getting hot in 03.

dude. check out your multiplication tables....15 x 15 = 225 + 28 = 253. That's 253 wins. 15 wins a season IS impressive and to think that those guys you mentioned (some of them) surpassed that, should make you appreciate them all the more.
