Accord
VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI predicted a "short reign" in comments to cardinals just after his election, and his brother said Wednesday he was worried about the stress the job would put on the 78-year-old pontiff. There seriously needs to be an age requirement far below the current mark of 80 years old.

ToadLicker
The young ones will elect an old one if they want him to croak in a reasonable time frame. Why elect a young one who would lock you out of having your own shot at some time in the future?

Its more that in this case JPII was a popular pope and it would not be wise to all of a sudden change his teachings. that could result in backlash, so putting in an older transitional pope can ease the transition into a new era of the church after his death. FutureGM
I would be very surprised if his reign lasts any longer than 6-8 years max.
Beinfest4Prez
Any bets on this Pope leading another 20+ year reign? I hear the odds are 10,000 to 1. :plain
