July 26, 200322 yr Did anyone care to point out that Seahawks Stadium is opening this year and a Seahawks game hasn't been played there yet this year? Or did it open last year??? :confused
July 26, 200322 yr Okay thanks I wasn't sure if they did or not. I'll be leaving this thread now for obvious reasons.
July 27, 200322 yr u cant even begin to say that arena football is better then soccer. soccer is big in othetr countries because it has an incredible history, its not just a sport..its a culture,a way of life. american sports r great, but none of them hav the history and the culture that soccer does.
July 27, 200322 yr who cares about that European trash! The real sport is football (and baseball). So they set a record at a stadium that has had 8 professional football games played there. Ladi frickin da. Heck, they aint even American teams! You go to Neyland Stadium and watch the Vols play, or Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and watch the Gators play, or go to Athens, GA, Baton Rouge, LA, Happy Valley PA, or Lambeau Field and you'll see what the American sport is. Just because the Canes can't bring in fans like other college teams do doesnt mean its like that everywhere.
July 27, 200322 yr "but none of them hav the history and the culture that soccer does. " ehh, who wants that culture anyway! Football and baseball are some good American culture (that sounded grammatically wrong but oh well).
July 27, 200322 yr Furman I hate to burst your bubble but youth soccer is actually doing very good.Don't be surprise if the next generation of kids are into soccer more than any other sport.I read an article saying that youth soccer is on a rise like never before and Soccer will play a much bigger role in years to come.
July 27, 200322 yr youth soccer is doing good b/c mommies dont want their kids getting hurt playing football. but do these kids play soccer b/c they have a passion for it? most no.

July 27, 200322 yr ok....the kids I see playing (and when I was in elementary school, junior high, and even high school) play because their friends do. They all play because its kinda fun. They're doin something, theres some competition, and if you are in Comp then you get cool Nike jerseys, Umbro stuff, and Adidas stuff. Then come high school, there are those certain really good people that play soccer. In college, I always get stories about "back when I played football, there was this kid who benched 455, bla bla bla" or "we played this one team in baseball...man that pitcher must have thrown 90 mph"....I never get "back when I played soccer in high school, there was this one guy who reminded me of Pele or Landon Donavan!" Plenty of people played soccer. Most played it, and are done. It is funny today listening to parents (i.e. soccer moms) talk about how they had to make their kid play some sport so they would be active....its usually tennis or soccer. Not even effing teeball anymore! I love that King of the Hill episode. "Dad, I'd rather play on a losing football team than a winning soccer team anyday!" When my dad coached youth football, the biggest excuse (for not playing football) he got was "soccer is much safer than football." Melbourne Central Catholic (my alma mater) won the state championship in boys and girls soccer last season. Football team came in like 3rd in their district and were grossly outmatched against good teams. Yet, you could combine the best regular season turnout for a game for both girls and boys soccer, double it, and it still would not come close to equalling an average crowd for a football game.
July 27, 200322 yr Last time I checked more soccer players in Europe died of head injuries from the ball than football players of any single factor or reason here in the U.S. My mother didn't let me play soccer (unless it was golaie where you use hands and not your head), she thought hitting a ball that hard with your head would be more dangerous than playing football.
July 27, 200322 yr i actually heard somewhere that there are more injuries from youth soccer than there are in youth football. Or more likely to get injured, or somethin. Maybe parents are afraid kids will like football and stick with it through high school. I have never had a serious injury (heck the only injuries Ive ever had were (1) in youth football i bruised my throwing hand (when i was QB) when someone got through the line and laid a facemask on my arm...bruising it lol and (2) I sprained a thumb BEFORE JV practice my freshman year screwing around). I mean I know people who tore ACLs, MCLs, PCLs, meniscus, had concussions, broken arms, legs, etc. But those were all in high school. Of course I've seen some injuries in college too.
July 27, 200322 yr my parents probably would have let me play any sport I wanted. I started teeball when I was 6 (youngest age possible), and started football (flag football) when I was 6. Did that 2 years, then became old enough to play tackle football at 8. I also played basketball probably around the age of 7 or 8....wherever we found a league (I didnt like YMCA...because they really didnt care if anyone travelled or double dribbled). I never was really that good at basketball. I think I never scored more than 8 points in a game.
July 29, 200322 yr soccer is a graet sport. it's really cool and here we have many good teams and can see good games. as someone said before, soccer is a culture here. but who cares about injuries? I think it's important to have fun while playing. soccer is an "import-sport" for the us. that's because it is not that popular. it's the same with basketball, football and especially baseball here. basketball and football are coming. there are some really good teams here and there is one special player who is very successful in Dallas and comes from Germany: Dirk Nowitzki. So why insult soccer as "european trash"? we accept basketball and football, too. US-sport is growing here for 10 or 20 years now. the generation before doesn't know and doesen't care about it. I think the reason why soccer is unpopular in the US is, because of the problems with the MLS and so on. did you see the soccer-worl-cup in south corea and japan? did you see the emotions in the stadiums and in the streets of seoul? in my opinion, they were compareable with the emotions around the superbowl. and the US-national-team wasn't that bad as many people expected. they were pretty good, as far as I remember. soccer is not some kind of "european trash". it is a very cool sport. it developed here in Europe and it's part of the european culture. In the US football, baseball and so on developed, so they are part of the american culture, but hopefully, soccer will have a chance one day in North America. :thumbup

I'm from Costa Rica and I love soccer as much as baseball. I dont see the MLS because American Soccer sucks, but I always see Costa Rica in all their matches. Soccer is also part of Latin culture.
July 29, 200322 yr oops, i forgot latin-america. yeah, of course it's also part of their/your culture. and in asia i's coming, too. the same with africa.

July 29, 200322 yr really? didn't know. but as we all know, football, basketball and baseball are US-national-sport. I think soccer still needs some time there. but it needs also people who give it a chance. maybe, as said somewhere before, the next generation gives soccer a better chance. btw: hockey and basketball are of canadian history. football comes from the english rugby and baseball has an old-culture history. :mischief2
