i dont know if this topic has been started yet but i want to know how you guys feel about him becoming an outfielder. to be honest, i think he gave up the pitching position wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to early. i was pretty disappointed when i heard he converted to outfielding. i mean, i know he had major control problems but all pitchers experience problems here and there. its just a matter of fixing it.

they tried and tried to fix it, and i think after a while it would get old trying to fix something that you know in your heart can't be changed. I also think he was pushed to the majors too soon. They wanted him up so bad and when he got up, he wasn't mature enough to handle the situations he was put in (because of his age). I also think that he may have gotten burnt out on the idea of pitching and thought it would be best for him if he quit while he was ahead....

He's had the control problems since late 2000, around playoff time...The organization figured that they may as well try and salvage his career in any way possible while he was still young. The constant psychological abuse he was taking by trying to improve his pitching was going to break him at some point. No use in hurting a guy from an emotional standpoint more than he already had been.

He is a slacker, that control problem can be fixed in an instant if he works on his faults.

Kind of an old topic, but what I don't understand about it is that he did okay last year pitching with STL. One walk in 10 innings. I guess he hit two batters, too. And he had a 5.40 ERA. Those aren't amazing numbers or anything, but it certainly looked like improvement. I don't know if he'll get that close as a hitter.

I dont see Ankiel succeeding as a hitter. He has been pitching all his life, its hard to go back to hitting when you havent practice too much since highschool/college.

He can't throw the ball over the plate with consistency. He's had problems throwing strikes from the beginning. The problem got real bad in 2001 when he threw 25 walks in just 24 innings. He has a career winnign record at 13-10, but he's never really been successful, and it's a good move by the Cardinals to take him out of the starting rotation.

are you giving stats just for the sake of giving stats?

Don't get me wrong I think it's great when people look up stats, but half the stats you give have nothing to do with your arguments.

Here's a useful one - he is batting .050 (1/20) with the Springfield Cardinals (AA)...

if im correct, i believe it was ankiel's decision to switch to becoming a position player and not management's. as a matter of fact, management wanted ankiel to remain a pitcher.
