May 28, 200521 yr Reliever Tim Spooneybarger has been shut down from throwing rehab assignments, and he will work on the side as he builds up arm strength. Spooneybarger, on the 60-day disabled list as he battles back from Tommy John surgery in September 2003, is not in pain. But for some reason he hasn't built up arm strength. General manager Admin Beinfest said he will throw on the side. "We want to get him on the side and get him strong," Beinfest said. Regarding his velocity, Beinfest said: "It hasn't been where it was." http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...t=.jsp&c_id=fla definately not encouraging news
May 28, 200521 yr So looks like he wont be back this year. Any new news on Alfonseca? Hopefully Valdez and Mota come back soon.
May 28, 200521 yr It has to be very frustrating for Spooney. His recovery is going much slower than AJs for example. Is anyone else wondering whether his might be a case where he never gets it back?
May 28, 200521 yr It's been almost two years, right? It takes time to build arm strength since he hasn't pitched in so long. Plus I wonder if some of it might not be psychological.
May 28, 200521 yr Crap. How often does a reliever go through Tommy John surgery anyway? I'd imagine it would be tough to construct a rehabilitation schedule for a guy who typically throws less than 20 pitches every other day.

May 28, 200521 yr well its not injury related.. so.. good.. its been to long since i said.. SPOOOOOOOOENY!!!
May 28, 200521 yr Too often too much is made of the guys who come back from Tommy John and not enough about those who don't. It's not surprising that Spooney is having trouble getting back in old form and that we may never see him in a Marlins uni again (not that it's what I want). The Fish have done everything they can and have shown tremendous patience, but at some point they are better off to cut him and forget him, and move on to someone with more potential, or at least who is able to contribute.
