at the risk of starting yet another Al Leiter thread....

... ... LHP Al Leiter may be running out of chances to remain in the Marlins starting rotation. Leiter, who is 2-5 with a 6.91 ERA in nine starts (and has a 10.44 ERA at home), will make his next scheduled start Monday in Pittsburgh according to manager Jack McKeon, but after that all bets are off. "When a person struggles and isn't doing their job, you end up searching all different places, and as a result you end up becoming scattered and confused," Leiter said. "It's a constant adjustment, a constant battle. ... My stuff is the same. I'm just not making pitches when I need to." McKeon was blunter saying, "You can't keep putting men on base all the time. Eventually, it catches up to you. He wants to get out of this, but we can sit here and talk. There's only one guy who can do it, and it's him."

I've been ripping Leiter pretty hard, but I can't imagine this is very likely, at least not soon. Anyone think there's a chance Leiter could actually be removed from the rotation?? It's not like we have a lot of options, I mean who else is going to pitch?

I think he's been crap, but if the other 4 starters keep pitching well, they probably can give him time to get it together.

* this is just the espn writer talking, I haven't seen anything from the Marlins saying that Leiter's starting job is in jeapordy.

Actually I did read the same thing in one of the S FL papers. Can't remember which one. I'll tiry to find the article.

I'm sick of having Leiter pitch. I will never go to a game that he starts.

We really need to get rid of him, seriously. We can't have him pitching like he does anymore. He's been horrible. Even when he doesn't allow runs, he gets the bases loaded. I can't handle watching him pitch anymore!

As soon as Valdez comes back he's gone. But hopefully we can get rid of him before then.

I must think he has been a great influence on our pitching staff, but he just doesnt have his stuff. :( In all honesty, I hope he gets out of it, but since we cant trade him due to the fact no one is going to take an aging starting pitcher with such a high salary unless we pay the bulk. That would be some serious bulk. :confused When in doubt, let em' come out of the pen. Maybe he can fill in where Rielding hasnt. :mischief2

I feel the same way you do, but you can't just blame Leiter, it also has alot to do with the offense not scoreing enough runs. The game verses San Diego is a good example we lost 2-1 when Leiter pitched.

Why is Valdez gone when he comes back?

No, the offense hasn't been scoring runs for Moehler, not Leiter.

That one start was just one time where they didn't score runs for him and he pitched "OK". I think that was his best start the whole season and he went 6 innings giving up 2 runs. But even yet, he allowed so many baserunners and had to get out of so many jams.

And he's gone when Valdez comes back pretty simply because Leiter sucks, and Valdez can actually pitch, or atleast he can do a better job.

I can't even watch gamecast for games he gets in.

I just saw somewhere that Valdez is pretty much starting over and going through the whole spring training process. He's got a good while till he gets healthy and ready to start. I say let Leiter work out what ever he's got to do. I'd give him until the All-Star break and till then the front office should be looking at options whether it be a call-up from AA or AAA or moving Al to the Bullpen when Valdez returns. As long as our other 4 starters are getting the job done the Fish are solid.

peronally i thik leiter would be best suited as some sort of mentor/bullpen coach or somehting along those lines. he seems to seriously lost his touch, but he has alot of wisdom to spread throughout this team

Don't expect Valdez to come riding in on a shining white horse before the All Star Break

Unless Scott Olsen magically starts striking out 2.5 batters an inning Leiter will be in the starting rotation a while.

Olsen gets his shot if Burnett doesnt make his next start :whistle

I heard

But all indications are that AJ's pen session today was very positive

Al Leiter is overrated as far as being an influence on this teams' pitchers. Most of that talk comes from the press who still think he's wonderful but you can't live on the past for long. Wiley is the person that has helped them. Leiter is quite a head case. That's his biggest problem...he thinks too much. I don't think he'd do well out of the pen either.
