Posted June 1, 200519 yr Just a thought... Watching Pierre struggle is beginning to irk me quite a bit. I know that he'll come around, likely sooner than later, but in the meantime, why isn't Castillo leading off? He's been hitting very well and doing an even better job of getting on base which, I believe, is the most important part of being a leadoff hitter. Have JP hit second for a few games, or even bat him 8th and stick LoDuca in the 2 hole. It won't be long now till Pierre gets out of it, I'm sure, but we don't have the flexibility in the standings to wait. Opinions?
June 1, 200519 yr Wait until Dontrelle is on the hill. Bat D-Train 8th with Pierre 9th. That way, he can still have his lead-off mentality and try to get on base, and if he sucks, well, he's at the bottom of the order
June 1, 200519 yr Because JP would just ground into DPs a lot. Then Castillo's leadoff hit or other hits would be kind of pointless. JP should be after the beef of the order.
June 1, 200519 yr JP isn't the sole reason why we've been struggling lately. I think JP just needs to take some games off and rest. He's so paranoid about not playing every game that he hasn't given his body time to recover from the spring training injury he had IMO.
June 1, 200519 yr 2) JP is not a good bunter, just avg 791540[/snapback] JP is quite possibly the best guy at laying down the bunt in the entire league the past few years
June 1, 200519 yr Yeah, I thought it was odd that someone would say JP is an average bunter. Many of his sac bunts turn to singles... not lately obviously, but once upon a time.
June 1, 200519 yr And NO, I am not implying that JP would lead off with a sac bunt. I'm not an idiot. But there are situations where he has had the opportunity.

And JP is not even close to being the best in the league. He bunts into a bunch of DPs and fly outs. Is there a place where we can see the stats on successful bunt attempts, etc? I'll be happy to eat some crow if I'm wrong. Roberto Alomar is probably the best bunter I ever seen.

June 1, 200519 yr Juan Pierre is easily the best bunter on the team, and could be the best in the league. Luiy is second and he's not close. There's no "prove it" to someone else, you have the burden of proof because you introduced the argument. Back it up.

June 1, 200519 yr I would love to see some stat on this. I'm going with personal observation and Felo have made several comments about JP being erratic with the bunt. And that being one of the reasons to why Castillo is not the lead off man.
June 1, 200519 yr Whether batting 1st, 2nd, 8th he's going to be limping around. Anyway, he's clearly doing a better job battling through injury than our other leadoff man.
June 1, 200519 yr Do you guys remember at the begining of the season when Easley led off the bottom of the ninth with a pinch hit double off of Kolb and pierre popped up a bunt that was turned to a dp? Thats one that i can remember to help freshfish out.
June 1, 200519 yr There are a couple of categories I would like to find more info on players like Pierre: - Sac Bunts - Sac Bunts Hits - Successful Sac Bunt/Bunt Attempts (%) - Sac Bunt Hits/Bunt Attempts (%) Can't find anything on the net.

Especially for a player as exciting and friendly as JP.
