June 5, 200521 yr Out of frustration, i've been thinking of a few ways to possibly give this team a wake up call and improve them in the long term as well. Here are a couple of possible deals I was thinking of: Send Guillermo Mota and a prospect/player to Boston for Keith Foulke and cash. Foulke has been horrendous this year, and with Mota's recent struggles and attitude against McKeon, I wouldn't be surprised if he was moved either. Foulke has really struggled so far this year, his mechanics are all out of whack, his velocity has been down, and his control has been erratic. I get the feeling Francona has just about had it with him and will soon make the move and give Mantei or Timlin a chance to close. Foulke relies on fooling hitters, and I feel playing in a conference where the majority of the hitters have never seen him, he could get back to form and become that dominant closer he once was. Back in 2002, he had a similar situation to this year, struggled terribly in the first half, eventually lost his closer job to Damaso Marte, but turned it around after the all star break and posted a 0.74 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP after the all star break. He's had six straight seasons of having an ERA under 3, a WHIP under 1.00 and an opposing batting average under .225 ( three of those years under .200). Mota would give the Sox a guy who is probably better suited as a setup man and som flexibility as far as the closer role goes. Another couple of ideas, although i'd be ALOT more hesitant to make either of these deals -- mostly because I'm a big fan of both the guys involved: Trade Mike Lowell to the Chicago White Sox for Aaron Rowand. The White Sox are in desperate need of a quality third baseman, Joe Crede is terrible and they have four quality OFers ( Rowand, Podsednik, Dye, Everett). Rowand too has struggled as far as power production is concerned, but is cheaper, younger, and would probably improve our team defense. He hit .310 24 HR and 69 RBI last year for the Sox, but what caught my eye is the .544 SLG % -- Lowell has never hit higher than a .530 SLG in his career. It would give us some financial flexibility and Rowand is alot like JP -- hustle every game, every inning. Rowand is traditionally a second half hitter, too, so his power numbers could go up in a hurry. Another our dissapointment for yours type of trade. Last but not least... Trade Juan Pierre to the Toronto Blue Jays for Vernon Wells. A trade that resembled the Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednik deal of this summer, JP would give the Jays a quality leadoff hitter they desperatley need, they've tried everyone from Orlando Hudson to Reed Johnson and none of them are true leadoff guys. Their GM is also a big fan of players like Pierre, i believe, so I think it would be at least somewhat attractive to them. I'd hate to see JP leave, really hate it, but lets face it, we have two leadoff hitters and Lo Duca who should be hitting in the two spot. Wells struggld early but has a ton of power and skill in general, we'd improve defensively in center bigtime, Wells rivals Torii Hunter with his defensive ability. He would also give the big two some protection. Remember not too long ago he hit .317 with 33 HR's and 117 RBI's -- as a 24 year old! He also is signed for two more years than Pierre is, dont quote me on that though. Some of these would be rather drastic moves, but just a couple of thoughts I wanted to get off my chest...be gentle :shifty

If we had gone 8 and 1 the last 9 games, but lost either one to serious injury, the season would be lost. Unless injuries cause them to miss more than 8 starts from now to season's end we'll win 92. The hitting will come around.

Then the Marlins starters were throwing complete game after complete game, and felt like there were greater deficits in the games. I'm not a huge fan of any of those trades. First of all, I would rather trade for someone who has been doing well this season and someone that is not having control issues etc. I think the Marlins best trading partner right now would be a team not in the race. Also, although Vernon Wells could be putting up better numbers in the future, he is not the type of player I would want to acquire right now in the middle of a pennant race. 797551[/snapback] Being someone who watches the Red Sox almost every night...Keith Foulke has been absolutely horrible this season, and there's nothing I've seen that suggests he'd be a reasonable upgrade over Mota. His location has been atrocious, and that's the big thing he needs to be successful.
