LARGO -- Terri Schiavo wasn't strangled and didn't suffer any other trauma before her 1990 collapse, and her brain was about half the size of normal when she died, autopsy results released today found.

 

The findings of the 39-page report back up her husband Michael Schiavo's contention that she would not have improved if she were given additional therapy as her parents requested and refuted allegations that Terri Schiavo had been attacked before her collapse and abused in the years after it.

 

But what caused her collapse remains a mystery, according to Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin. For years, officials have theorized that she suffered from an eating disorder, but Thogmartin said there wasn't enough evidence to support that.

 

Thogmartin also said he could not say for sure if Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state because "PVS is a clinical diagnosis arrived at through the physical examination of living patients.''

 

But Dr. Stephen J. Nelson, a medical examiner who assisted in the autopsy, added, "There's nothing in her autopsy report that is inconsistent with a persistent vegetative state."

 

Thogmartin said she would not have been able to eat or drink if she had been given food by mouth. She also was blind, he said.

 

"Removal of her feeding tube would have resulted in her death whether she was fed or hydrated by mouth or not," Thogmartin said.

 

Thogmartin said her brain was about half of its expected size when she died March 31 in a Pinellas Park hospice, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed in a wrenching right-to-die dispute that engulfed the courts, Congress and the White House and divided the country.

 

Her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, fought their son-in-law in court over their daughter's fate for nearly seven years, battling to the end with conservative lawmakers and anti-abortion activists at their side.

 

Michael Schiavo said his wife never would have wanted to be kept alive in PVS, with no hope of recovery.

 

The Schindlers, however, doubted she had any such end-of-life wishes and disputed that she was in PVS. They contended she laughed, cried and responded to them when they visited her in the Pinellas Park hospice where she lived.

 

They believed her condition could improve with therapy, despite most doctors saying her condition was irreversible.

No surprises with this news...I didn't believe the stories that Schiavo's husband beat her. Clearly it was all BS now.

 

There was no way that she could have possibly recovered from this brain damage.

I kept saying "why don't her parents just let it go?". Now my cousin is almost in the exact same position (complete life support, in a coma). She's been in a coma for about 3 weeks now, and I don't want her to be taken off, no matter what.

 

Completely different...trust me.

It is still your child...but neither of us have one so we have no idea the love you have for your child and for you to have a hand in the direct death of your kid, that would be horrible and a near impossible thing for someone to do...

BTW MikeyFan, I am very sorry to hear that. But I think 15 years of pain and suffering for your daughter or being artificially kept alive is really cruel and unusual.

I have no doubt that my parents would do EXACTLY what her parents did. But I really wish they wouldnt. Im not religious but I do believe to some extent in the concept of a soul and if that soul is trapped in limbo....

I dont know about your cousin Mikeyfan, but Schiavo's parents didnt have legal custody of her. She was a married woman. According to the law of the land, her husband gets to make those decisions, like it or not.

 

 

The parents couldnt let go, so they tried everything, grasping at straws, and as a result smeared Michael Schiavo's name greatly. It's one thing to go through an internal struggle, but 3 weeks is not 15 years thats right. They were grasping at straws and couldnt grasp reality. The right wing is stupid again, as we saw with all the stupid protests at this time. We wont even get into Congress, where Bill Frist can make a medical diagnosis based on video tape seen, which as we all know now wasnt exactly truthful.

 

 

At some point you have to come to grips with reality. As much as breathing is natural, so is eating. Put food next to her bed. If she eats it on her own then so be it. If not then she is dying a natural death, as far as I'm concerned, same thing as with breathing. You have to breathe to survive, you have to eat to survive. I find it funny that people were yammering on about her being starved. a) she was a vegetable. b) she couldnt get her own food so in reality the only one starving terri schiavo was terri schiavo. Its harsh but in reality it makes a lot of sense.

 

 

May she rest in peace now and hopefully her body will meet up with her soul which departed many eons ago. Wait what am I saying, her soul was gone many years ago, finally the body can go into the earth that it came from, the rest is already gone and was gone for years.
