July 27, 200520 yr Jack can't honestly expect consistent success if day after day he's usually warming relievers twice per game, calling them in at the last possible moment and hanging with them for additional innings.
July 27, 200520 yr Agreed. However, we just need better relievers. AA, Mota, Jones are the only trustworthy guys we have (granted Mota has been inconsistent, but we all know he can get it going). We need to add two quality bullpen arms and we need to do it NOW. Don't wait, pull the trigger as soon as you can get two quality arms.
July 27, 200520 yr he's over using our bullpen arms and bringing in the wrong pitchers in tight situations.what happened to jack mckeon of old.
July 27, 200520 yr Author Prin, I think a lot of the guys who are now in minors or other teams would have done much better with another manager or coach handling them. Consider me skeptical that a newly acquired reliever will not be able to pitch up to his talent here.
July 27, 200520 yr that is like saying with more fan support, the team would win a lot more games! I disagree. Look how the players where playing for Torborg in the beginning of the 2003 season. Look what happen when Mckeon came in. I strongly feel Mckeon is not getting everything he should out of the players and a move (firing Jack)should have been made weeks ago. Example of players playing for their manager look at Bobby Cox.
July 27, 200520 yr Author DogFish, while I'm sure you're trying to say something, especially on this topic, but I can't tell what.
July 27, 200520 yr Team - Maybe in the context (relief pitchers) - I seriously doubt it. These guys who are in the minors or on other team are marginal major leaguers. If you cant throw strikes, you will not have a long career.
July 27, 200520 yr trade for marte and get rid of de los santos Only way we get Marte is if we trade A.J which would make Marte less valuable to us. What we need to do is make the Boston trade then acquire another reliver.
July 27, 200520 yr Author You can't throw strikes if your arm is tired or brought in a situation where you can't trust the defense to keep the run from scoring.
July 27, 200520 yr I suppose you must find any excuse for the relievers You can't throw strikes if your arm is tired - off day yesterday brought in a situation where you can't trust the defense to keep the run from scoring. - huh? Cant trust a ML defense? Good pitching will beat good hitting!
July 27, 200520 yr Author Now you're the one finding excuses. This isn't about tonight's game. If any event tonight prompted its posting is how tonight's most effective reliever, Alfonseca, was handled. Regardless of your feelings about the ability of this defense, a pitcher is not going to pitch to contact with a critical runner on second or third base. Anyway, it's more the combination of factors that is the problem - the dryhumping, the late hook, close game due to previous poor pitching/defense or hitting. They work against eachother and do not lead to these pitchers performing at their peak ability.
July 27, 200520 yr every manager worries about the lefty, righty matchups. show me a team with no bullpen problems. they all have problems there. you know why? because middle relievers are scrubs, that's why. so when a manager finds one i a sort of hot streak he is going to ride him until his arm fall off. why? because eventually he is going to pitch like the scrub he is, so you might as well use him when he is got things going for him. managing a bullpen? there's no such thing when you have 5 scrubs there that you can't trust in any situation.
