Mike Hampton

I'm not incredibly familiar will Marlins history from 1998-2002 (the dark ages), how did it come to be that we owe so much money to Mike Hampton when he hasn't pitched for us in years?

We had to move Charles Johnson and Preston Wilson's contracts so they were dealt to Colorado in exchange for Mike Hampton and Juan Pierre which even though was taking on Hampton's money was less of a financial hit then the 2 deals we got rid of. Then we shipped Hampton off to Atlanta for Tim Spooneybarger. I think we did this because Hampton didn't want to play for the Marlins since he didn't feel they would contend... hah we only won the world series the following season... anyway Atlanta pays some of his deal as does Colorado with us paying the majority thus far (if I remember correctly). We cut the money owed by making these moves and picked up JP. Spooney would've been a nice pickup too but unfortunately has had injury problems.

Thanks, I understand this a bit more now. Wasn't that money freed up so we could sign Pudge? I remember thinking when I heard about Wilson for Pierre (I was unaware of Johnson and Hampton in the deal) that it was a shame we got rid of a talent like Wilson. I guess I was wrong seeing as JP until has been very worthwile for us till this year, although he still shows up time to time.

it was the marlins MO to focus 2003 on defense, speed, and stellar pitching, and to cut down on strikeouts. they didn't need a combined 275 strikeouts from the two of those. when you put the ball in play, good things happen. thats why. so then wehn they picked up a guy like pudge, in the middle of the lineup hitting .420 with RISP...everything works out perfectly.

We are Hampton-free after this year.. we're paying something like $11 million to him this year

I think Colorado is still paying some

The Braves amortized his salary to $8 mill/year

I hope the money we don't have to spend anymore on Hampton after this season goes towards keeping AJ

Actually most of that pudge and hampton money that we're getting off the books after this season are going to go into delgado's contract. This year hes making 4 mill (i think) and next year it goes upto around 14

Hampton is off the books (finally) this year, while we owe deferred payments to Pudge ($2M), Leiter ($2M) and Valdez ($750K).

The other side of this that the Braves finally have to start paying all of Hampton's inflated contract next year. While they've only been paying $2M, $2M, $1.5M the past few year that steps up substantially to $13.M, $14.5M, $15.5M the next three years.

I hope the money we don't have to spend anymore on Hampton after this season goes towards keeping AJ

Don't hold your breath on that one. AJ is as good as gone
