August 27, 200520 yr Yankees near deal to acquire Cubs OF Lawton The New York Yankees are close to a deal to acquire outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. The Yankees would send a minor-league player to be named to complete the deal. And so it begins.. Fire sale? Hmm..
August 27, 200520 yr Lawton is a free agent at the end of the year, the Cubs are out of it, makes sense for Chicago to get rid of him. They arent having a firesale....
August 27, 200520 yr Author So the Cubs trade Jason DuBois for Jody Gerut for Matt Lawton for PTBNL? Umm.. Ok?
August 27, 200520 yr Yep good moves for the Cubs, trade Jason Dubious, Jody Gerut, and Matt Lawton for a player to be named later, good move!
August 27, 200520 yr Lawton hasn't walked hardly at all since getting to the Cubs, which is baffling considering the OBP he had with Pittsburgh, plus they aren't resigning him anyways, so hey why not dump him?
August 27, 200520 yr I really didn't get them trading DuBois(wasn't he their #1 or #2 prospect at the start of the year?) They have a poorly run orginization, and I blame that on ownership. They could have a payroll that dwarfs any in the NL and most in the AL with the kind of revenue they generate plus the fact that the Tribune company is a media empire worth countless dollars. But not only will they not invest in a good product, they wont even pay for badly need renovations to Wrigleys Pub. That orginization needs an overhaul.
August 27, 200520 yr Author Yankees acquire OF Lawton from Cubs BRONX, New York (Ticker) - Concerned with Bernie Williams' poor throwing arm, the New York Yankees acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The Cubs received minor league pitcher Justin Berg in the deal. Yankees acquire Matt Lawton from Cubs NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in exchange for minor league pitcher Justin Berg. He has played for five teams in parts of 11 major league seasons with a career batting average of .269. Berg, 21, was 6-1 with a 3.07 ERA at Class A Staten Island.
August 27, 200520 yr Are they going to play Lawton in CF?? If so.....:plain. He was HORRIFIC playing LF at Wrigley, I can't imagine how bad he would be in center at the spacious Yankee Stadium.

I mean, the guy was a butcher in LEFT at WRIGLEY......put him in CF at The Stadium, that's just scary.....and Lawton can't throw at all either.

Regardless, he will be an improvement for the Yanks. He's not Jim Edmonds but he'll do the job at what is reasonably expected of a CF'er, which is not something we can say of Bernie this seasson (or anyone else they stuck out there).
August 27, 200520 yr The Yankees gave up nothing to get him, but if this means taking Bernie Williams out of the lineup then :banghead :banghead :banghead . I guess thats the end of Tino playing first and Giambi playing DH.
August 27, 200520 yr Yeah your right about his native position being CF now that I think about it. He just looked so slow and couldn't even cover LF at Wrigley (or throw), so I can't imagine him being ANY good in CF at Yankee Stadium. But hey, I've been wrong plenty of times before.
August 27, 200520 yr Ken Rosenthal just said on Fox that the Yankees plan on using Matsui in center and Lawton in left, with Womack going to the bench and Bernie to DH. Better offense, better defense.
August 27, 200520 yr Lawton hasn't played CF since 2000 and only 9 games there since 1998. So, it's probably a good thing they're not putting him there. "Natural position" or not.
August 30, 200520 yr Just jacked one out. God the M's suck.... EDIT, and something of note on Lawton...his home was struck by Katrina. Matt Lawton spent his morning watching coverage of Hurricane Katrina, the storm that has ravaged the South. One of the areas hit hardest by the hurricane was Gulfport, Miss., which is Lawton's hometown. His parents, Lynette and Matthew, took shelter in Lawton's house, which is 10 minutes farther from the coast than their home, but Lawton's home suffered some serious damage as a result of the storm. "My roof didn't make it," Lawton said. "Sometimes my family is a little dramatic. They were throwing some words out there today that sort of scared me." Lawton got word on Monday morning that his family was OK, receiving text messages on his cell phone from several family members. "It's a little scary when you can't communicate with your family," he said. "I got some texts from friends saying it was like a war zone." Lawton's wife and children were still in Chicago, but they planned to return to Gulfport as soon as flights were on schedule again. The outfielder said he had no plans to leave the Yankees to head home, saying that as long as his family was safe, there was little he could do about the damage. Manager Joe Torre said that if Lawton needed to take a couple of days, he would receive permission to do so. "It was a little stronger than we had anticipated," he said. "All of my family is OK. I know everyone is in a safe place. ... I saw some footage of two or three minutes from my house, and I saw a lot of houses that were underwater. It's going to be a while before everything is back to normal."
September 10, 200520 yr how can a guy with his front foot closer to the plate than his back foot be able to hit well? the guy has a closed stance, and any inside pitch is just destined to be fouled or popped up
