I know I'm going to offend a whole lot of you, but why do people insist on being fans of a college team that they never attended? To me, the Miami Hurricane obsession is the single most asinine thing in South Florida sports. We can't get anybody to support our professional teams, but the Canes are sacrosanct. Why doesn't UM get some of their filthy rich boosters to build a stadium (afterall it is a PRIVATE school), instead of using taxpayer money. Every big college team builds their own stadium through Allumni donations, let UM do the same.

And can someone please explain to me why you're a fan of a team whose school you didn't go to?

Why must one be an alumnus in order to be a fan? That logic is shortsighted. Many Miamians grew up as Canes fans because they represent the local area. Go to an FSU game in Tallahassee, for example, and see how many "locals" go to the games, and how many more that have never enrolled in a class there own tons of FSU paraphenelia.

Calling me shortsighted doesn't explain why people are loyal to a team that they have no reason to be loyal to. I don't understand the logic of being a fan of an organization that you are in no way associated with, and why that team should get preferential treatment to a local professional team. Can you explain that to me?

I didn't call you shortsighted, just your logic regarding this topic. For a long time (mid-1980's and before) the Canes and the Dolphins were the only major sports entities in South Florida. For natives such as myself who grew up here in the 70s and 80s, the Canes were OUR team, regardless of whether our parents, aunts, or third cousins went to school there or not. This has been passed down to the younger generation. That's the reason. It's about supporting the home team (or home school in this case). I can't explain it any better than that.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that UM has been one of the most successful college football programs of the past 20 years!

I really have no comment on the preferential treatment issue.

By the way, oh gracious message board, FAU still plays its home games at JRS. Might want to resolve that conflict.

And FL, I'm a Canes fan because both my parents are alum (been rooting for them almost literally since birth) and would have gone if not for monetary considerations.

They play at Lochart Stadium. They moved the OSU Game to JRS hoping it will help boost attandance to meet the 15,000 requirement.

Family alums are completely understandable. I should have put that in my original post. My parents are Penn State alums, and I'm more of a PSU fan than I am a UF or FAU fan (both places that I attended).

Well that makes sense and I thank you for responding to my question. I'm just embittered because I don't want my favorite team to fall by the wayside while South Florida is willing to give public funds to a private university.

I am a UM fan and I will be a UM fan for the rest of my life. My mom is a part-time teacher there, but that is not why I am a UM fan. I am a Hurricane fan because I grew up in MIAMI and I grew up watching them, that is reason enough.

When I apply for colleges this year, I will apply to UM, and I will most likely get in, but I will not attend there. Why? Because I want to get away from home and experience something new and because it's pretty expensive. Does that mean I cant be a UM fan?
