September 19, 200521 yr IMO, I think the Marlins will announce that they will be seeking relocation after the season is over. I mean, why won't they make any public statements that they are still commited to South Florida and to finding a way to build the ballpark? I e-mailed David Samson asking him if a deal for a new ballpark was dead. I asked him if he thought there was any hope that this thing could get done. He could not even answer that. His response was: we will have public statements after the season. Thanks for your e-mail. I mean, if this thing wasn't dead and there was still hope why wouldn't he just say so? I think it is because there is no hope so they are just waiting until after the season is over to announce that they want to leave. I really hope I am wrong.
September 19, 200521 yr I maybe in the minority in that i dont think the Marlins will leave but I think we could be in for a scenario where Loria guts the team and they suck for a couple years and mlb eventually buys him out . I think as bad as the fan base is in Miami mlb wants a team there for a number of reasons and Vegas and Portland arent mlb towns if Loria moves to either place after a few years he will wish he was back in florida because vegas wont draw flies and portland will be under 20k a game as well.
September 19, 200521 yr In addition I think if Loria comes out and says he is losing money I think he is lying and would invite him to open up his books because the payroll is the high 60's I know for a fact with the national tv revenue , ticket sales , local tv and radio , concessions even with a bad deal, merchandise , sponsorship and corporate advertising he makes more than enough to meet payroll and other expenses . No doubt a new stadium would make him more money but I dont believe for a second he is losing money !
September 19, 200521 yr He may show a loss on paper, but the appreciation on the team certainly exceeds any losses.
September 19, 200521 yr He may show a loss on paper, but the appreciation on the team certainly exceeds any losses. 953965[/snapback] I was thinkging the same thing. Loria could sell this team for far more than he bought it.
September 20, 200521 yr I think you might be reading into what he said too much... but in any case can't really blame them if they do look elsewhere. There's only so long they can wait to get it done in Florida.
September 20, 200521 yr Oh yeah? Where will they go? Las Vegas?? :lol Portland?? :lol Washington? Oh wait So where do you think this team can be relocated to? :mischief2
September 20, 200521 yr It's not a simple proposition to move the team. Just look how long it took MLB to move the Expos. I suspect Loria will be forced to sell the team long before serious relocation discussions ever take place.
September 20, 200521 yr The team should be moved-all the way from Opa Locka to downtown. Miami and baseball belong together.
September 20, 200521 yr Author I hope you guys are right. And you guys do make very good points. Where the hell would they be moved to anyway??? Second, MLB would probably pressure Loria to sell to someone who has deeper pockets who can close the financial gap for the ballpark. This is my hope!!
September 23, 200521 yr What about the hurricane shelter idea? It was a great thought, and I am sure the legislature would go for it.
