As we all very well know, the NY media can get pretty extravagant with their praise of certain sports darlings. They talk about a lot of NY baseball heroes [some deservingly so some not so much] as padding their Cooperstown resumes. I?d like to know what people outside of the five boroughs think about the legitimacy of the following candidates for making it in to the Hall of Fame:

First - Bernie Williams

He does own a ton of postseason records. He is among the top 5 in most offensive categories among Yankees. But, was his career good enough over all? Am I just down on him because his diminishing skills are most prominent in my memory banks?

Second - Gary Sheffield

Based on pure numbers, Sheffield has the credentials. Could he be the first player voted in to wear a Florida Marlins jersey?

Third - Derek Jeter

?Mr. November? has really really GOOD numbers but lacks the truly impressive stats of his teammate and contemporary [and surefire 1st Ballot HOFer] ARod. That being said, he is know as ?Captain Intangible,? and is a certified NYC hero and absolute media darling. Will he make it in based on his postseason heroics or will he need to get 3,000 hits [which he almost certainly will] and an elusive MVP award [much less likely to happen] before he garners enough credit to earn a trip?

Finally - Don Mattingly

Will ?Donnie Baseball? get voted in by the veterans committee? He, along with Wade Boggs, was certainly one of the premier players of his day. Is he hurt by the fact that he was a 1 bagger? Is he hurt more by having his career shortened by back problems?

bernie no, sheffield no, jeter yes, mattingly yes

Bernie in his prime was a great player. Not record-breakingly great, like Barry or ARod, but great nonetheless. And a real nice guy to boot.

As for the Hall, I see him as a candidate on the fringes like Andre Dawson and Steve Garvey -- not a first ballot inductee, but not a scratch either.

bernie no, sheff yes, jeter no, mattingly yes

Yes to Jeter & Mattingly. Bernie is a flagrant no and Sheff has been good, but aside from perhaps last season, was he ever the dominant man in his position?

sheffield needs a little more

bernie no

mattingly no

Jeter yes barring a career ending injury. even then he might be in.

Jeter will definatly go in: respects the fans, one of the best lead-off and SS's.

Sheffield is actually the only Yankee I like for obvious reasons, but he is to average, has not done much to wow people. The average 30+ Homers and stuff.

Bernie also has not really wowed anyone, he is a good CF, not bad, but again nothing that "wows"

Active HOF'ers in New York:

Jeter, Rivera, ARod, Randy Johnson. Maybe Sheff...he's going to need to hit 500 HR's to have a shot.

If he doesn't win another ring, and he leaves the Yankees after his contract runs out, he'll probably go in as a Marlin.

Jeter and Mattlingjlkjljlkajlkjgk are going to be in the hall. Bernie won't go in and Sheff is still depending on how he finishes his career. A-Rod and Rivera will also get in. I don't know if Torre is in the hall or not, but he'll be in there too.

Bernie - NO

SHeff - Maybe

Jeter - Yes

Mattingly No, not unless Keith Hernandez gets in
