Redman to be fined?

Redman could face fine for comments on ump

DENVER -- Marlins pitcher Mark Redman could be fined by Major League Baseball for his remarks about umpire Jim Wolf and his brother, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Randy Wolf.

"It's unfortunate. I'm sure Bob Watson (baseball's discipline czar) will be looking at that very closely.''

On Thursday, Redman was asked whether he thought it was strange that Jim Wolf worked a game involving a team, the Marlins, that is competing against his brother's team for a playoff berth.

"I guarantee that crosses every player's mind," Redman said after taking the loss to the Dodgers, 6-4. "You hope he doesn't do that (allow his family connection to influence calls), but it does cross people's minds. But he's a professional.''

Redman was asked that question after he discussed three close plays involving calls made by Wolf. Redman never said he thought Wolf intentionally blew any calls and even said the plays were so close they could have gone either way.

Redman did tell reporters that as he walked off the mound after one close play, he yelled to Wolf, "You're better than that!"

"The problem was that the comments were juxtaposed with accusations that he missed calls in the game," Anderson said. "That was an unfortunate connection for a player to have made.''

Watson is looking into the matter, but there's no timetable for his response. He simply could speak to Redman about it, or fine him.

Alderson said he saw no need to have Wolf call American League games to help avoid even the appearance of a conflict.

"We are cognizant of appearances of conflict," he said. "If we were not extraordinarily confident of Jim's ability and impartiality and integrity, we would not put him a position where he could be compromised."

Alderson also said he didn't think it was necessary to prevent Wolf from calling Marlins games, or games that Redman starts, because of possible impartiality in the aftermath of Redman's remarks.

The Marlins play six more games with the Phillies, starting with three games on Sept. 16-18 in Philadelphia. The Marlins, who are one-half game behind the Phillies in the wild-card race, have not said they think Wolf should avoid calling Marlins games.

"There are situations that arise in a season where clubs claim for whatever reason that certain umpires are particular to another team or against their team,'' Alderson said.

"While we look at those allegations seriously, I am not aware of situations in the last several years where we have consciously rescheduled umpires not to participate in games where clubs have alleged bias in one way or another."

Alderson said Redman's remark was "the first suggestion" of a possible conflict with Jim Wolf that he'd heard from a player in either league.

Jim Wolf is one of 17 Class AAA umpires who help fill in for the 68 permanent major-league umpires. Alderson said the league is required to grant vacation time to umpires, even in the pennant stretch.

eh not a big deal....

he shouldnt have opened his mouth, but he did....

i still have yet to read anywhere where Redman specifically accused Wolf of anything whatsoever. all he did was bring up the point that it's in the back of player's minds sometimes. What I read was "you hope he doesn't do that. but he's a professional."

after seeing Wolf 'umpire' at 1B yesterday, I am starting to think he should NOT be umpiring any NL games this year.

He was awful and it's smelling fishy..

I can make you one if you'd like. I think you kids are too young to realize because you're mostly bandwagon fans, but the real FLASH is Luis Castillo. Don't forget he's led the league in sb's like 3 times or so and had 50 sbs in '99, 62 in '00(MARLINS RECORD) and led the league in '02 with 48. Forget that loser Carr who can't even make a throw to the cutoff man and photoshop Luis in there as former flash.

if you cant appreciate the fact that everyone here is a marlins fan and not a bandwagon fan now that they've started winning.

and also appreciate the fact that most people here no more about the marlins than you...

than go away

This is AMERICA DAMN IT! Redman can say any damn thing he wants.

This isn't the first time anyone thought about the conflict AND there is a conflict but it's the first time anybody had the guts to tell the TRUTH!! MLB has no business letting Jim Wolf umpire in the National League...PERIOD. Dictator Selig worries about what Pete Rose has done to baseball? All it takes is just one bad call....ooops I'm sorry. Bull ***T!! MLB has a double standard. If Redman should be fined, I can tell you that this is one person who has spent his last dime going to or buying anything MLB.

They are not going to fine him. Remember when the Marlins were supposed to be fined for not interviewing a minority? They will slap him on the wrist because he didn't do anything serious, but "defied" an umpire and MLB office desicion. David Sternism is spreading all over sports.

Bah, Rumors...

He will just be given a slap on the wrist and told that it can't happen again.

You get off the hook if you tell me the movie.

Luiy the real FLASH? Ahem, the original and real flash is Chuck Carr. Maybe the fact that YOU are a bandwagon fan made you forget his ridiculous catches, his blazing speed, and the fact that he played hard every single time. Never stopped smiling, ran hard even with ten pounds of jewelry around his neck. And I'm a bandwagon fan for seeing Chuckie in Juan Pierre? Um, this would probably go to proving I'm not since Chuckie isn't exactly a legend here. A folk hero amongst the die hards sure, but it isn't like I picked Gary Sheffield now is it?

Now, most people on the board had a quick snap at you. I tried to tolerate you. But look, since you've come on you've tried to do nothing but make everyone look bad and you've failed at doing so. Can you just seriously stop that already? Seriously? It's getting boring. It's people like you that give us a bad name.

Can you just seriously stop that already? Seriously? It's getting boring. It's people like you that give us a bad name. yea i was just like 8 or 10 at the time but I still noticed that Carr was a conceited, limited talent player with his head up his a$5. Are you the one that suggested he come in as a coach? now that is funny man... Carr was good for 2 years if even that. Yeah he had a few nice catches, I even remember one where he dived in the Big O on astroturf and burnt himself up. He still is garbage and you give him too much credit..

face it, YOU are the bandwagon fan. Anybody in Miami knows Carr because they knew the marlins for two seasons... 3 if you include now.. that is 1993, 1997, and 2003(partially). You werent there to see Castillo have his best seasons and I bet you were glad to see that Counsell won the job over him as well in 1997.

Congrats, you qualify for being a bandwagon fan. No offense, theres nothing wrong in being one.

You were like 8 or 10, and you claim time and again I'm too young to not be a bandwagon fan? Look son, you may be older than me physically (which you have yet to prove) but you obviously has some work to do mentally. I go to about 25-30 games a year. This is on my own flow, I don't get other people to pay for my tickets. This is considering that up until now it has been near impossible to get anyone to go with me because I don't drive and my mom was the only one that cares about the Marlins (but she has my lil bro and lil sis to deal with, no time for the oldest :( ).

I'm a bandwagon fan right? I've been playing baseball 11 years. The reason I started playing baseball? Because I heard there was going to be a team in Miami and I figured I'd better start now so I can play for them one day. Since then this pipe dream has come close to dying being as I have negative talent, but that was lifted me to start playing the game that I love. Thats right, the Marlins.

Now, I don't know who you think you are. Just because you think Luis Castillo is the second coming of Jesus Christ doesn't make you a die hard instead of a bandwagon fan. I think Michael Vick is the second coming of Joe Montana, but I'm not a Falcon fan. For your information, I happen to like Luiy. I'm rooting against Pujols because Luiy is one of my favorite players. But its wrong for me because I like someone else right? Because I havea differeing opinion I am a bandwagon fan? Welcome to f***ing America my friend, enjoy your stay.

I've liked Juan Pierre since he was a Rockie. OMG I'm a bandwagon fan, I liked someone from another team! He came to the Marlins, I was thrilled. I heard his entrance music, and he's been my favorite Marlin ever since. He always goes for every ball full speed, tries as hard as he can to make up for an average arm, and really is the true captain of the OF.

So he may never hit in 35 straight, big deal. He might not ever hit a homerun in Joe Robbie, who cares. He's my favorite and thats what matters to me, you got a problem with it then thats your issue not mine. He reminds me of Chuck Carr, because he played hard and made up for the fact that he wasn't the most talented person on the field by running to every ball no matter what, jumping higher than he was supposed to be able to, sliding, breaking up double plays. He played with heart, and thats what in my mind makes a baseball player or any athlete truly a player. They play with heart and they enjoy what they do.

You know, I would tell you the things I've gone through for My Marlins. But frankly, what is the point? I know no one will laugh at me here for doing it (though I will get a couple "Why?" but I don't mind). But I do know that until you spit out something tangible it's not worth wasting my words on you.

Despite a possible fine, I think Redman is right about this one. There were so many bad calls during the series with the Dodgers, it was incredible. Most of them were so bad that you wanted to throw a shoe at the TV, or a beer can at the ump, if you were there. Something was going on.
