MIAMI -- One of the most dependable closers in the league is officially on the free-agent market.

Todd Jones, a Comeback Player of the Year candidate, formally filed for free agency on Friday after posting 40 saves and a sterling 2.10 ERA with the Marlins.

Also filing on Friday was versatile backup infielder Damion Easley, who completed his second season with the Marlins with a .240 average, nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 102 games.

In all, there are 13 players from the Marlins eligible for free agency. Filing on Thursday were A.J. Burnett, Juan Encarnacion, Alex Gonzalez, Lenny Harris, Brian Moehler, Ismael Valdez and Paul Quantrill.

The remaining players to formally file are Antonio Alfonseca, Jeff Conine, Jim Mecir and Mike Mordecai. Mecir, a dependable right-handed reliever, says he is retiring. Mordecai was brought up in September to provide veteran experience in the middle infield after he managed the Marlins' short-season Class A Jamestown squad. Mordecai may try to play one more season as a backup infielder with the Marlins. If that option is not available, he likely will manage for the club at the Minor League level again in 2006.

While Easley has said he would like to return to the Marlins next season, Jones' status is up in the air. The veteran is seeking a two-year contract. At 37, he posted some impressive numbers, becoming one of the most dependable closers in the league. Jones had 40 saves in 45 opportunities, striking out 62 batters hile walking just 14 in 73 innings.

Bring back Niner, Jones, and Easley please

AHHHHHHHH

NOOOOOOOOOO

THE PAIN!!!!

THE AGONY!!!

*dies*

god dammit beinfest

Filling for FA is a formality, doesn't really mean much.

I say we give Jones the 2 year contract he wants. I would still like us to sign another closer and have Jones as a set up guy. It worked well for us this year to have 2 or 3 guys who could close.

1st off Marlinsfan4life I got to give you two thumbs up for that Sig! CHICKS ARE HOT!!!

Anyways, I think in the Marlins case we bring back Niner and Easley. I let go of Jones. Yea he had a great season but look at the others.. What did Armando do this season? Urbina since 03? I think we can find a cheap good closer out there and he will work in our system... I doubt Jones gets more than 25 saves next season

Bring back :ymca

If Jones goes, who do we put in the closer spot? Try to sign Farnsworth? Let Resop, Messenger, Bump try for it? Go for Wagner?

I Wouldnt die if Jones goes.

I think hes done, what he did was unexpected but I dont think he has another season like that up his sleeve.

im sure someone will come around

Octavio Dotel--I know he had his downs but hes got potential

Matt Mantei--Dont give him the closer role but he wood help

Kyle Farnsworth- Hard thrower, could compete for job

Billy Wagner-Hate saying his name after what he said about the marlins in 03, but hell of a player

BJ RYAN--hell of a season and will do it again, but i doubt he leaves with Mazone now hired

Tim Worrel and Jose Mesa?

theres others

im sure if Jones is gone I trust Beinfest to find someone, even if it takes till april

Those Free agents I think will for sure put up better numbers than Jones next season. I would like to see maybe Dotel. Others like Wagner will get to many teams interested and I know the marlins arent ready to go into a bidding war for a closer...

I read reports that they want to bring back Looper... :o :banghead :thumbdown

If the current trend continues Looper will have an amazing season for us and lead the league in saves.

^

The funny thing is... YOUR RIGHT!! I agree with you 10000 %! LOL!

Looper made $5 million this year, wouldn't keeping Jones be cheaper?

2 Things:

1- Looper did make that much and he is not worth close to that!! Plus I doubt the Fish would give him that much, If they did I would do this :banghead

2- Keeping Jones wouldnt be cheaper... He had a huge year this past season hes going to ask for big bucks! Not to to to much but he wants a 2 year deal. The Marlins dont want to get invovled in that.. He could have a decent year this season and blow the 2nd year... Remember Jones isnt a young stud, hes toward the end of his car.

We can't keep this revolving door of closers every single year. We need someone that we know is dependable and is already is established with this team. I think the Marlins would be crazy if they don't give Todd Jones the two years he is looking for after coming in here and doing the job that he did last season when he wasn't even supposed to be the closer in the first place.

bring him back and try and sign another free agent who is capable of closing, if Jones dosent work out right away we can allways shift him in the bullpen and give the other guy a try or maybe even give Mota a 2nd chance :mischief

I'd rather take my chances with Looper :shifty

The Marlins aren't going to be able to afford guys like Wagner, Farnsworth and Ryan so cross them off your wishlist. They belong in the "When hell freezes over" list.

It's up to Beinfest to sign his yearly "washed-up closer" that will lead the league in saves and depart at the end of the year.

i dont know if jones is worth bringing back on a two year deal

yes what he did last year was amazing, however looking at his career stats, last season it could technically be considered a fluke.

plus the guy is 37, and could always go back to the old ERA around 4.00 todd jones.

i say let beinfest work his magic and find another closer.

HOWEVER

if we can bring back jones back on a 1 year deal, im all for it

Move Mota to closer, get a good fireman.

Move Mota to closer, get a good fireman.

I think that's the way to go. That was the plan in '05 and Mota got injured along with Alfoneseca so Jones kind of backed up into the closers role and he went with it. I wouldn't mind at all having Jones back but I think Mota deserves another shot.
