August 22, 200322 yr Author like I said, Fox did so well for us last season. Seabass > Fox, Mordi Fox's numbers last season are better than AGon's over the last three months. And stop giving the "D. Lee defense". That his defense warrants a little extra slack (Like three years worth of slack). This team just got outscored by 11 runs, at Coors.
August 22, 200322 yr sooo, Mordi/Fox in at SS instead of SeaBass would have helped us how? And, Banks/Fox/Mordi at 1B would have helped us how? Actually, in the last 2 games, I believe Lee has had 4 hits. Maybe we would have....no wait, we still would have lost 9-3 and 10-4 in the 1st 2 games. And if someone else had been at SS tonite, we would have lost 4-3 instead of 5-4.
August 22, 200322 yr Author I prefer to look at his impact on a little bit larger of a scale than one night. A Gon is a career .246 hitter who averages 9 HR and 47 RBI per year. Puke. If he was on a great offensive team, then maybe. He sucks the life out of the botom third of the order.
August 22, 200322 yr Fish Fillet , Thank god the Marlins have such a good fan like you . Can you imagine a stadium full of Fish Fillets ...Christ you would think you were in philly with all the booing and negativity going on in the stands . Fillet you seem pretty smart, so you should realize that if you replace a great Defensive SS with a mediocre SS ala Mordi or Fox , you will then be getting scored on alot more often , thus meaning alot more work at the plate for the batters . Im going to be MADDENesque here and say that a Great Defense most always beats a Great Offense. Example: Marlins vs Cards. way better hitting team than the Fish but their defense cant touch ours . If im not mistaken we won 2 out of 3 there . Hopefully you see what im saying here . Oh yeah i forgot Stop being so Damn negative all the time , I would hate to see you coach a little league team.
August 22, 200322 yr Author Thanks for your 2 cent personality critique.... And if you want to be madden-esque in analyzing the Fish, it's not defense, it's pitching. He's batting under .200 the last three months. I'm pretty confident that Fox could muster up a BA higher than that, especially given consistent AB's. All I'm saying is that this is Alex Gonzalez. It isn't a slump, it isn't a trend. It's the way he is. He will always be below average offensively, and he isn't exactly suiting up with Murderer's Row, which makes his pitiful offensive performance even more glaringly inept.
August 25, 200322 yr i think we can probably put this one to bed now. alex certainly isn't the player who was hitting .320 with the huge slugging % in the first half of the season, but he's fine for the #8 hitter. couple homers lately & he was killing the ball last night in the win against the giants.
August 25, 200322 yr If Alex hit .230 Id still start him over any other guys we have. SS is the most important defensive position in the field behind catcher and Alex ranks 3rd best by most standards (also if your interested Lee ranks first, Lowell first, and Castillo 2nd...this in the most highly regarded SABR formulas) Theres a reason why horrible offensive players find jobs at these positions, because their defense is worth having around. Everyone can accept that A-Gon is in a HUGE slump right now, but of all the games I watch he seems to have the worst luck with hard hit balls finding gloves. It happened twice last night for immediate examples and many other times I've watched games. His main weakness at the plate continues to be breaking stuff away. I'd be more than satisfied with .250avg and 15HRs a season from him.
August 25, 200322 yr not to mention, he has as many RBIs (uh oh, the overrated stat lol--had to throw that in there sham ) as Lee. And, he seems to be heating up again.

HOrrible offensive players do find jobs.... On offensively stacked teams that can afford to carry them at the plate. A huge slump right now? His career numbers aren't that high above what he's doing now. Worst luck? I think three + years of this has to do with a little more than luck, it's not like he's in a little 3-25 slump here. And, if Joe Schmoe nobodies like you and I can recognize weaknesses in his offense from watching TV, what kind of field day are MLB advance scouts having on him when they write "the book" on him for upcoming series? not to mention, he has as many RBIs (uh oh, the overrated stat lol--had to throw that in there sham ) as Lee. And, he seems to be heating up again. A little of this can be contributed to the fact that Cabrera gets on. And D. Lee looks like Ty Freakin' Cobb at the plate compared to Sea Bass.

Fillet I flat out refuse to believe that you would rather start Andy Fox at SS for the rest of the year right now after Alex is having his best year in the majors. You're too sensible for this. Your mind has been clouded by the 5 game losing streak. It's the dark side of the force or something, you just can't be thinking clearly. No one on the board agrees with you. NO ONE. Anyone out there agree with Fillet? Anyone? Now stop fooling around and admit that while it's true that he's no offensive star, the Marlins do not have a better option.
