December 5, 200520 yr With the Marlins having a record payroll, you just can't expect them to stay at that level for more than one or two years... You just have to respect that playing in SoFla. The team obviously just didn't work out, for that team to reach a playoff caliber it needed some more peices... Which would have added more to the payroll. Adding more peices along with keeping together the team through arbitration and free agents... So we basically would be paying more than our records payroll to keep a team together that didnt make the playoffs... If we cept the team together it would have hit rock bottom probablly around 2007, 08 without any championships or probably playoff births along the way... The fire sale now gives us a chance to be contenders again in 2007, 2008 where if we keep the team together would be hitting rock bottom with too high of a payroll... The team wasn't going to work out anyway, lets get a change of personel... Signing the best free agents every offseason and trading your prospects away doesnt always work... Mets, even the Yankees... You need to develop some homegrown players and start another core for this team. A perfect time to have a fire sale if your going to have one.
December 5, 200520 yr The Marlins invented the word 'firesale'. In the past 15 years, only one team has had a so called 'firesale'--- The Marlins... Twice.... Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?"
December 5, 200520 yr Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?" I would say after noon, but before 5 PM.
December 5, 200520 yr Author The Marlins invented the word 'firesale'. In the past 15 years, only one team has had a so called 'firesale'--- The Marlins... Twice.... Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?" Name another team with a fan base like ours... Marlins fans help themselves, if you want a team, go to some games, if you want a firesale...don't
December 5, 200520 yr Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?" Yes. During a seller's market and when you need to reload your minor league system.
December 5, 200520 yr Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?" Yes. During a seller's market and when you need to reload your minor league system. I hope you're joking. There is no excuse for a firesale other than the unique situation in South Florida. If you want to unload some salary to get younger, that's one thing. But to trade everyone making over 1 million dollars is not acceptable....ever.
December 5, 200520 yr Is there really a "perfect time to have a firesale?" Yes. During a seller's market and when you need to reload your minor league system. But only with more pitching, right?

Despite the shock among some disilusioned fans and those viewed the public relations campaign of 03-05 as something more than it was, the reasons have existed for 8 years. You just asked when it the time is appropriate. I answered it. That may not allow to come to terms with the reality of the situation, but if it nothing has yet, I'm not sure what will.

December 5, 200520 yr Depends on your perspective. You weren't relying on welfare from third parties that don't like paying it or don't think it's doing anything right, and would sacrifice it and part of the baseball season for greater gains. Also, as a fan, you have much less severe exit barriers to consider.
December 5, 200520 yr Rebuilding? Woah, this is simply a "market correction". Call it what you like, but The Firesale it is not and should never be related to when it comes to the off the field issues.
December 5, 200520 yr Call it what you like, but The Firesale it is not and should never be related to when it comes to the off the field issues. You're suggesting that a firesale has nothing to do with off-field issues? Haven't the last 3 major fire-sales in the MLB proven that exceptionally wrong. The last two Marlins firesales and the Padres in '93 all were having trouble drawing fans, had high-priced easy to move players, and felt they'd better serve themselves by gutting to the bottom and making money instead of fielding a winning team that "loses" money. Rebuilding has nothing to do with off-field issues, but fire-sales, almost by definition, are completely reliant on the stability (or lack thereof) of a franchise...
December 5, 200520 yr There is no excuse for what the Marlins are doing this offseason. I have been a fan since the beginning. One offseason firesale was enough and since the club PROMISED not to ever do that again, I put it in the past. But it's happening again and I will not just take it this time. I have given up on the Marlins. Anyone who is down to burn all their Marlins sh*t, lets make a date and do it in the parking lot at Dolphin's Stadium!
December 5, 200520 yr IS BILLY THE MARLIN STILL WITH US? They non-tendered him. He would make too much in arbitration. He's free to sign with anyone.

Maybe the team promised not to do it again, but winning teams usually draw more than just above 20 grand per game. That's your excuse. It's unfortunate, but it's also the reality of the situation.

December 5, 200520 yr I just want to throw out there that a) the rule 5 draft is coming up and b) perhaps more importantly, it's expected many players will be non-tendered this year, including guys like Milton Bradley (used for example purposes only) who may not win the Mr. Congeniality Award but nonetheless is a pretty darn good ballplayer.

PLease explain Rule 5 and non-tendered. These terms are never really defined, but people use them all the time. I believe that Rule V is when a player is kept off the 40 man roster for 3 years in a row(depending on age)...And non-tendered is a contract term that I think I know what it means, but don't feel like making an ass of myself in front of everyone. Thanks!
December 5, 200520 yr Non tendered is basically when a team releases a player that is under team control but that is not under a long-term contract.
December 5, 200520 yr Ideas to keep the Marlins in South Florida: 1. Ask Shaq to buy the team. Then name him manager. Who wouldn't pay to see Shaq wear a baseball uniform and stand on the top step of the dugout sending in signs to the 3rd base coach, Damon Jones. 2. There are 17 million people in Florida. If everyone gives me 5 dollars, we're set. 3. Sell the Panthers to Canada. With the exchange rate, that should get us about 38 dollars. 4. Write to your politicians and tell them "I pay your salary". 5. When a cop pulls you over, tell him "I pay your salary". 6. Next year a make a soda, some nachos, and a bag of peanuts cost $58 dollars. Well, not sure how cutting prices helps, it was just an idea. 7. Send an e-mail to the Mayor of Miami, Carlos Alvarez (mayor@miamidade.gov). Even if you didn't vote for him, tell him you're glad he's not Marion Barry and you really want the local government to make an investment in keeping the Marlins in South Florida. Or say whatever your heart tells you. 8. Attach a branch of one of the state universities to a new stadium and get the state to pay for it as a "classroom". How do you think Doak got built? 9. Give Las Vegas an expansion team and get rid of the D-rays. Ever been to a game in a garage? Tampa fans have. Nobody will miss that team and then nobody will try to take ours. 10. Build a stadium next to the Hard Rock casino. Tell me thats not a perfect site, and after the game everyone can wait in line for 3 hours to sit down at a poker table. From:

You're suggesting that a firesale has nothing to do with off-field issues? I'm suggesting that the only comparision you can draw between the two is that when it comes to transactions themselves. Loria's not cooking the books to raise the issue of a bad stadium. Those in power know the problem. The lease wasn't around then. This firesale is coming about to correct some poor decisions made by Loria and Samson based on their faith in the South Florida market. Their efforts were not met by public officials and the potential fan base. Unlike you, as stated in other threads, I don't think you can blame them for making that effort.
December 5, 200520 yr Author Non tendered is basically when a team releases a player that is under team control but that is not under a long-term contract. I thought non-tendering had to do with arbitration, if a team does not want to go go through arbitration w/ a player, the non- tender him, making him a FA
