AP: Source: Huizenga's offer to help build ballpark in jeopardy

Featured Replies

I am sure Huizenga is offering the Marlins a terrible lease - just as bad as the one they're currently in. The Marlins should at least give a counter-offer like Hotcorner says. They could increase their contribution to the stadium in exchange for a lease in which they keep nearly everything. MLB can step in and offer to help the Marlins with $20-30 million of up-front money. But, if Huizenga's lease offer is still bad I say the Marlins pass on this "offer".

This basically confirms what city officials have said about the Marlins. Is Samson pouting and refusing to deal with Huizenga because the Marlins got a sucker lease deal on the current stadium? That's what it sounds like to me. Decline the offer, accept it, or make a counter offer, but don't do nothing. If they truly want to stay in South Florida it seems they would at least explore this option.

The least they could do is communicate with Huizenga's people on this offer.

Nah, that would suggest that the business end of this team is run by "professionals" .

Seriously, you think anyone has given the Marlins the slightest hint that they're unprofessional in their negotiation style? I mean, more than one party has seemed to suggest they haven't the slightest idea how to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to thoughtful negotiations.

They probably did. And when Huizenga got to the part about maintaining the lease, the Marlins told him to f--- off and now Huizenga is busy attacking and pressuring the Marlins in the media.

Funny, Samson isn't shy about having a war of words in the media, if they're being "attacked" and "pressured" in the media, you don't think Samson would come out and spin this in ownership's favor?

I'm not saying Huizenga put an offer on the table that would be called "no-strings-attatched," but it sure is suspicious that the Marlins aren't exactly standing up for themselves, yet they've shown no hesitancy to do so in past failed negotiations...

I recall the Marlins' hardly ever using the press in their negotiations with the state, county and city. It was only after things fell through that the Marlins spoke.

I want numbers. I want to know what Wayne's offering & what the Marlins demand.

I know I won't get it, just sayin'....

Again, just speculation, but Huizenga's probably willing to fund the gap (the $80 million or so needed for startup costs) and in return he wants part of the stadium revenue to pay back his contribution.

The Marlins are probably balking at this because they either a) think that the stadium really shouldn't even cost them as much as it is and certainly don't want more money taken out of their pocket or b) are hesitant to agree to this scenario without going back to the state legislature for the tax rebate money one more time.

Even if "b" is true, there'd still be a $20 million gap (since the Marlins went to the state asking for $60 million, and had a hard enough time with that, they're not going to be able to get $80 million), so I fail to see such a hang up, unless of course they're foolish enough to believe that somewhere will build the stadium for them for free.

Of course we won't get it. The Marlins stand to gain nothing in negotiations by being transparent.

By the accounts reported by the Dolphins and their agents, the current gap is $80M with the Dolphins unwilling to say if that includes shares of gameday revenue. One would have to assume that such a provision is already a demand of theirs, and not a bargaining chip towards filling the gap.

I generally don't post anyting, I just mostly read from this site. However, I have noticed that some of you have links to some "Out Of The Park" simulation leagues. I would really appreciate it if someone could send me some information about it. My e-mail address is Hmpalmetto@aol.com. It sound's very interesting. Thanks
