December 21, 200520 yr Cardinals signed RHP John Riedling to a minor league contract. After taking a one-year deal from the Marlins, Riedling hurt his shoulder in March and never made much of a contribution, finishing with a 7.16 ERA in 27 2/3 IP. December 22, 200520 yr For all the talk of bad signings, I'm surprised no one's brought up Looper yet :shifty Look, let's be honest, the Cardinals were not going to have great pitching next year. For the amount of money/years they gave to Ponson and Riedling, they're not exactly putting themselves over a barrel. They likely would have been average without either of them, and they'll likely be average with both of them. Then there's always that possibility that Ponson eats innings and wins 12 games, and Riedling has an ERA below 4 and both of these deals come up golden for the Cards. I like both of them actually, and it's not like their farm system is great or that there were better fits out there. (Though, for the record, if they're going to give the money they did to Looper and experiment with Ponson, they might as well have matched the Jays offer for AJ and smiled all the way to a third division title). This is the first time the Cardinals have looked vulnerable in the Central for some time, but that doesn't mean they're going to be bad, or they've made stupid moves.

I cant say I've been impressed with the offseason but the track record speaks.. They pick up some scrub and he does good.. They'll be fine.. The Season doesnt start tommorow..

Marquis had 1 good year in St.Louis and is now back to sucking. Was Carpenter really that bad or was he just coming off an injury. And they get no credit for getting Mulder "because he had a bad seond half". They get credit for getting him, but not making him good.
December 23, 200520 yr Carpenter was coming off injury but that was towards the end of his stint in Toronto, and his entire stint in Toronto he was pretty bad.

There's a thing called the ownership leaving payroll where it's at.. Reggie Sanders gets 2 years at 10 million who is 38 I believe.. Mark Grudzielanek wanted a 2 or 3 year deal and the money he got paid.. Please.. Morris goes for nearly 9 million a year? I'm sorry.. Way overpaid.. Admin Walker retired and he wasnt much last year.. The roster right now really is.. Ray King replaced by Ricardo Rincon for a much cheaper price.. King was horrible last year (and no I'm not saying Ricardo is a lot better it just freed up some money).. Julian Tavarez replaced by right now, Braden Looper.. They may sign Felix Rodriguez.. Riedling was a minor league deal so he's gotta work himself onto the team.. Admin Bigbie, So Taguchi, John Rodriguez right now are the starting outfielders beside a declining Edmonds.. Certainly no Reggie Sanders or Admin Walker but those two barely played much at all last year truthfully.. Matt Morris.. He was HORRIBLE, flat out HORRIBLE in the 2nd half last year.. He's on the decline and for 9 million a year I'd rather go 6 deep and take my chances with Anthony Reyes and Sidney Ponson taking Matt's spot.. Aaron Miles (AAA player), Hector Luna (marginal role player in MLB), and Deivi Cruz (LOL!) are at 2nd.. The winner will be starting.. Maybe Junior Spivey will have a role in this too if he signs.. There isnt a whole lot out on the market.. Junior Spivey is about to decide between Colorado and St. Louis.. Cardinals are still interested in Juan Encarnacion.. I would have to say as of today, I dont feel good about the team currently but it had to be done.. Grudz may have had a fluke year.. Sanders had a good year but was injured all year really.. Do you take a chance and overpay for those two or hope for someone to step up? I dont know.. Not a great team or anything right but the season hasnt started.. If this is the team in March, then I have reason to worry but until then I'll wait and see..
