Quick Gathright update

Featured Replies

The market for free-agent catcher Mike Piazza appears alarmingly thin; the Rays could be a possibility if they traded Aubrey Huff. The Marlins and Nationals remain interested in Rays center fielder Joey Gathright, and the Mariners could get involved for Gathright if they trade Jeremy Reed to the Red Sox. The Marlins want to evaluate the young pitchers they acquired this off-season before trading one of them for a player like Gathright.

Well with Petit's stock rising and Anibal's inevitable ascent, I wonder if the Fish are more keen on trading Olsen?

That's an excellent strategy. Let's get them all into ST to help us rank them before making trades.

If the Rays are gicing up Baez for Jackson which I's don't think highly of, why the f*** are we going to give Olsen away for Gathright which is the 5th best OF in their MLB team. Its rapage.

Edwin Jackson is going to be a Star.

I'd rather see Gathright traded somewhere where he can have a career and not get traded in 2 years...

This is the definite way to go. Although the winter leagues offer some good incite on our new talent, the players will play even harder in ST, because none have a guaranteed spot and are in need of making a good impression. Who knows, we might have a lot better starting 5 than we ever could have thought. We wouldn't want to trade that away for someone who hasn't fully proved themselves yet like Gathright.

All I can say I'm speechless at this trade.

If Jackson equates to Baez, one has to wonder what they'll get in exchange for Aubrey Huff?

Yeah, that trade is wow. He may be a project, but he was once the #1 prospect in all of baseball.

The Rays are quite brilliant. Their offense is starting to see some good players develop and they've got some young arms. Too bad you can't compete in the AL East unless you spend lotsa money. They'll probably end up getting another steal with Gathright.

we hope so....

the idea with Huff is to see if he'll put up good 1st half numbers, then trade him before the deadline.

You've said the same thing for like 3 years.

OK, I'm not advocating it, but what about bringing back (yeah, that sounds weird) Piazza?

Let Olivo be the back up, or platoon partner. Piazza's still a name and productive enough for his position, and he could (in some off field ways) outperform any menial one year contract he'd sign.

Thoughts?

Certainly he could help this group of young arms develop. But I don't see the FO spending a single million more than they have to this off-season.

No way the Marlins sign Piazza. I would think it would be a very good move, but the Marlins are just too cheap to do it.

By the way.......Piazza would start if he were here......still way better of a player than Miguel Olivo.

I would bring him back and trade him halfway through the season to a contender that needs a little depth/a bat.

We could get a few good specs for him for the price of a couple of million perhaps.

On the otherside the marlins were too cheep to offer arby to jones(even if he took could of traded him). So what can we say about our ownership this year?

only that they are still better then the drays and kc

2006 marlins shooting to not be last.

First of all MP isn't signing for $million or less, second he can no longer play everyday at either 1B or catcher (he'll be lucky to catch-on as a DH in the AL), and third why?????

What does he bring to the table expect a faded name (sort of like ex-boxers being employed as greeters at Las Vegas casinos) and the ability to occassionally jump on a mistake pitch? Perhaps some of you forget how easy it was for the Fish to run on Mikey in the last few years.

I have all the respect in the world for his accomplishments throughout his career but all he would do here now is get in the way of legitimate player development. And let's face it, that's what 2006 is all about.

Just sign Terrance Long or Jeff Davanon to play CF if you don't want to give up Olsen and move on. Either one of those guys would be an upgrade on what we have in center.

Jeff Davanon would be a nice fifth outfielder if we were a contending team stacked with all-stars and bonafide major leaguers competing for a divisional win.

Since we're not, he has no place being part of the Florida Marlins 2006 roster and neither for that matter, does Terrence Long. When Kansas City can't find a place for you that's really saying something.

Let's face facts, he really hasn't played CF since 2002. He no longer as the skillset to play there defensively and offensively, well, his stats speak for themselves.

Well playing Reed or Abercrombie (neither of whom is ready) or Aguila (who scouts say is no better than a fifth OF) in center is a recipe for disaster.

Mayhaps. I'd like to see us get a leftfielder before a centerfielder if that player isn't in our future plans.
