September 2, 200321 yr I agree with Fillet that the stadium should be in Broward, because let's face it - most of the Marlins fan base is from Palm Beach and Broward counties. If the stadium was in Ft. Lauderdale or Hollywood, it wouldn't be such a horrible trek for Dade County fans, and would probably encourage more people from West Palm to go to games.

That would be an interesting stat to know...what % of Marlins attendance comes from which counties...??
September 2, 200321 yr I think it's a matter of comaring sheer number of residents (Miami-Dade) versus affluence (South PBC and Broward). It does no good to build a stadium in the middle of a couple million people if half of them can't afford to eat, much less go to a baseball game. Another aspect to consider.... The Heat and the AAA. I, along with alot of freinds I know from Boca, used to go to Heat games alot. No one goes anymore. Slave through traffic all the way downtown; beg, borrow and steal to find one of those great $20 parking spots, then hope and pray that your car hasn't been stolen, blocked in, and/or vandalized when you leave the game. Then spend another 20-30 minutes to get out of downtown. Baseball down there too? No thank you. I'd even go so far as to say that I'd rather keep PPS than see a new ballpark downtown.
September 2, 200321 yr A new staduim downtown would have to come with an intense mass transit effort dedicated to getting fans to the stadium from all the surrounding counties. My Dad and I have season tickets and we used to go about 30 times a year when I was in high school because PPS is so commuter friendly. From North Palm Beach its not too bad a drive there and back and the two highways alleviate most of the traffic problems...interesting stuff!
September 2, 200321 yr No one uses mass transit unless they are too poor to have access to a car or because it's 10 times faster than driving. Sorry, that's just the way it is. You can build a rail spur next to the stadium or whatever, fact is no one with money (the people you want to go to the games) will be seen dead on it, much less take it instead sitting at home or sitting in traffic.

That's BS. If I go to the AAA or the Miami Arena or a 'Canes game at the Orange Bowl, I park my car at a Metrorail stop and take the Metro to the event. It's a lot less stressful and cheaper to go that route. Anyone who is too proud to park their car in a Metro garage and take a 20 minute train ride to an event and then pays $20 and hassles with Downtown Miami is a fool, but Broward/Palm Beach residents aren't too bright when it comes to mass transit. Thankfully, Miami-Dade doesn't have that stupid mindset.
September 2, 200321 yr Before you go insulting people, maybe you need to consider that you are insulting pretty much most of suburban America. If you take the time to research and study the incredibly boring and mundane academic field of spatial urbanization and growth patterns (which, unfortuanly I have) you'll note that almost every single urban mass transit system in America is terribly under utilized, and has been since their respective implementation. Pick any city other than those whose mass transit systems provide a unilaterally quicker transportation option to any destination (ie NYC) and you'll note that they cost too much and carry far below acceptable levels of traffic. That's why they are subsidized by the government in most cases (subsidization = losing money on their own). And don't forget the perception problem. Middle class and higher people don't want to be seen on mass transit. It's perceived as not safe, full of poor people and not worth the risk to either save 20-30 minutes in the car or stay home.

No, this can't and won't happen. You put the stadium in Broward, you lose the whole Miami fan base. Whether you think it is true or not, us down here in Miami-Dade County with damn good reason think of it as our team and we won't go see our team in downton Fort Lauderdale or anywhere else in Broward. And to Fish Fillet, you used to go to Heat games alot before? Then whats wrong with putting the new stadium where all those old Heat games were?
September 2, 200321 yr Look at the hockey team! I live a good 30 minutes from Broward. I live in central dade. What about South Dade where there is a lot of baseball fans? Thousands of people work in Downtown. What about a stadium right there? Dade is already starting to work on a new mass tranist system. PPS is OKAY! But a stadium in downtown would be so much better. Face it. People in Broward and Palm Beach live way out in the "suburbs". Shouldn't the stadium be placed in the center of the city? Moving a stadium for Broward wont happen but if it did it would wipe out the whole Miami fan base.
September 2, 200321 yr I would be all for picking up JRS and moving it to the Miami Arena site. Its a nice park.
September 2, 200321 yr The Panthers have good attendance for having such a bad team. they draw a little bit above 17,000 per game. The Arena is nice and is near Sawgrass. It can be easily accessed by thos in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Naples/Fort Myers. Now if Broward would only pay for it :mischief2
September 2, 200321 yr If you take the time to research and study the incredibly boring and mundane academic field of spatial urbanization and growth patterns :o ..you lost me right there
September 2, 200321 yr I just want a ballpark built, it being in Sawgrass would be a big plus since I would be able to go to more games. I am considering going to my first panther game this season and it's because they have a nice promotion for those of us in Fort Myers that says in 2 hours we are on ice and the back home. Pro Player is a 2.5 hour drive at best. Downtown Miami is 3 hours at best.
September 2, 200321 yr Pro Player is a great stadium. Gets the job done. Very clean! It would be nice in Miami Arena. Now did someone say the Panthers are easily accesable for Dade fans? Nope! Its an hour drive, and there is nothing near the stadium. It is in the middle of nowhere, and there is no reason to go out there unless you are a hockey fan.
September 2, 200321 yr I would be all for picking up JRS and moving it to the Miami Arena site. Its a nice park. That's been discussed already....The Marlins would like to build a stadium on the site. David Samson left Miami management directors with the impression the Marlins were unwilling to pay for any of the estimated $450 million for a proposed ballpark in the area and would cover only rent payments up to $100 million. And of course, the director wasn't for that scenario. He also said that using tax money wasn't an option...

Park was referring to JRS, not to the Miami Arena site. Though that would be preferable at this point for a new stadium.
