Dan Uggla piece from Flamarlins.com

The thing that has me wondering a little about Ramirez is the fact that after they traded him they dumped Renteria. I'm wondering if they soured on Ramirez a little bit because of his season in AA?

More or less, same here.

I really want to see what Jacobs does. I think he holds a big key to the line-up. If he or Willingham fail, the Marlins won't score at all. They need both of those guys to come up huge.

Basically, Jacobs and Willingham have to be enough of a threat to get Cabrera some strikes to hit.

Don't get me wrong [i don't really care for Uggla, personally I think he stinks and the Marlins suck for acquiring him, but]......I hope Uggla can win second base so I don't have to watch that stiff Pokey Reese play.

fixed your post

I can't speak for anyone here, but I am not the slightest bit excited by Hanley. The more I read about him, the less I like him and think he simply was the product of big market hype.

Hope I'm wrong, but he's hardly one of the one's I'm dying to see. I'd rather see guys who put up numbers in spite of the scouts (like Petit) instead of people who don't put up numbers despite what the scouts say.

You are wrong because you aren't looking at age. When Uggla was 21, he was playing for the University of Memphis. Hanley is 21 and just hit a .720 OPS in double AA his first full season. When Hanley is 25, he is going to be Jimmy Rollins, not stuck in double AA and only playing for a big league team because the DBacks have awesome MI depth and couldn't afford to sacrifice a 40 man roster spot for him. I think Boston hype got people thinking Hanley might turn into a Tejada type hitter, which is not the case, but he's still going to be a top 10 SS in baseball when he establishes himself. There is nothing wrong with being Rollins, or Furcal, or Renteria, or Lugo.

Lou....does that mean Willingham is only gonna hit .230?

I'm thinking more .250/.350/.450, but the differance between .230 and .250 is like 8-12 hits over the course of a season, which isn't much. Willingham's value is in OBP and if he has enough power to jack 25 bombs in 450 AB. Poor man's Adam Dunn.

I agree with you Lou about Ramirez. I hope he turns into a solid pro. Everyone here thinks I'm so negative.....I hope all these guys turn into stars, but I know it won't happen.

I mean, this thread is hyping a 25 year old AA Rule 5 Draft pick.

I just wish the Marlins could have gotten a 2B, LF and CF back in their fire-sale. The thought of watching Aguila, Reed and Uggla/Reese as one-third of the line-up is upsetting.

You know one player no one has mentioned in this thread about wanting to see

HANLEY RAMIREZ

I really hope this is an oversight for some of you wanting to see UGGLA

completely agree with you.. more I read about Hanley and the fact that he gets all this hype without ever backing it up with a monster minor league season does not sit well with me

Thanks for telling me my opinion is wrong. :thumbup

When you get a chance, could you look into your crystal ball and tell me how I'm going to do this semester?

Count me as someone who wants to see Hanley Ramirez play. Another aspect of big market hype is that whenever a player leaves only his faults are reported on as soon as he's traded. Every scouting report I have read mentions that he has great tools. Now is the time to see if those will translate to performance.

In his first big league spring training last year he hit .389 (7 for 18) with two doubles, no home runs, and four RBIs in 13 games, and made just one error. An article in the Boston Globe had this quote, "Hanley is one of those guys, the bigger the stage, the better he plays. We're not in a position where we have to rush this kid," Francona said. "When he's ready to come here, he'll be ready to play. I'm looking forward to seeing that. He has a chance to be a pretty special player."

Now all we hear are the negatives. Same thing happened with Marte. When he was dealt to the Sox, all we heard was what a great player he is (and I do happen to think he is a very good player) and now that he's an Indian all you hear is bad winter ball, possible elbow problem, overmatched in short big league stint, etc.

Thanks for telling me my opinion is wrong. :thumbup

Sensitive much? I'm just disagreeing with you. Feel free to watch Uggla play, because it won't be that long. I think you are crazy to want to see him play over Hanley, who despite whatever struggles in double aa you believe he had last year, is a huge part of this organization's future. He's the 3rd most important position player we have next to Cabrera and Hermida. High ceiling middle infielders are a lot harder to find then corner players.

I do agree with you about Petit though. I think he is the # 1 P prospect in the organization and want to see how his supposedly inferior stuff keeps producing a sub 3.00 era, 7 hits per 9 innings, 9+ K/9, 2 BB/9, etc. My only concern is he is starting to give up HR at an alarming rate, but that might be because he is still 20. We'll see.

Still, there has to be something wrong with him. Every stat report I've seen on him is quite impressive, and even coming from a system as loaded as the D'Backs, a guy like that usually shouldn't be left unprotected.

I think it's likely his defense. He's not considered a whiz with the glove. Although that didn't stop someone like a Todd Walker from having a very successful career in the bigs. I'm interested to see how his decent #s in the minors will translate to the majors.

starts the chant from the right-field seats: U-G-G-L-A, U-G-G-L-A comeon everyone join in

and get this.... Uggla's middle name is "COOLEY".

You just can't beat that. :hat

If Uggla winds up as good as Todd Walker......I would take that in a heartbeat. I doubt it though.

absolutely. And I'm not really suggesting he will be.... just that guys who aren't great with the glove can still work out.

Sure they can, but if Uggla was gonna be anything special......the Diamondbacks would have kept him. Craig Counsell starts at 2B for them.

Well, they got Hudson. Craig moves to short. And he is very under-rated. Had a .350 OBP, .375 slug, was 26/7 in SB, and hit 9 bombs. That's a pretty decent hitter for a low cost middle infielder.

The point being no one is losing any sleep over losing Uggla.

No one would lose sleep over losing you either.

And in 1997, Craig Counsell was a 26 year old AAA player with Colorado with 3 Major League AB's to his credit. While it may be a long shot, Uggla could turn out to be a Counsell-type player in that he's a late bloomer (or just never given a chance) and goes on to have a solid big league career.
