Beware stats

Featured Replies

I was reading a piece on the Marlins website regarding Marlins players from a fantasy pick standpoint and when I got to Travis Bowyer I started laughing out loud.

"Travis Bowyer | RP | $9

With a fastball that approaches 100 mph, Bowyer has "closer" written all over him. The only question is when his big moment will come. Bowyer's minimal Major League experience produced mixed results -- he allowed six runs in 9 2/3 innings with the Twins last year, but struck out 12 and walked only three. The 24-year-old almost certainly will start the season in Florida, and Borowski may be the only thing standing between him and the closing job. Think that will last? Neither do we. Go for Bowyer as a late-round sleeper, but be prepared to ride out a few rough patches before he starts delivering the saves."

True? Absolutely. The real truth (or perhaps better said, the complete truth) though is that in his first seven appearances against Cleveland, Oakland, Detroit and the White Sox he compiled a 1.04 ERA over 8 2/3 innings, only to wind up getting snakebit against the lowly KC Royals for five runs in one inning of work, skewing his numbers (in my mind unfairly) to the upside.

So when you look at some of these kids stats, dig a little deeper. You might be surprised what you find.

And the 12/3 K/BB ratio is impressive as well.

I also checked out a few of Bowyer's pitching appearances on MLB.tv and I will tell you that he is the real deal. Lively fastball and a decent slider and changeup. What stood out to me about Bowyer is that he throws real hard (he was throwing 95-98 regularly) but has a real easy delivery. It's like you don't expect him to throw that hard based on his motion. He reminds me a lot of Brad Lidge, except he doesn't seem to be exerting as much effort on his delivery. Bowyer is definitely our closer of the future (if not in 2006).

Same principle as slighting past batter-pitcher matchups or a player's batting average with RISP and 2 outs.

Not trying to be an a**hole, but you can usually get statistics to show you whatever you want to see. The explosion of stats in baseball has really created nothing more than glorified number 'yes-men.'

The Matrlins closer, whomever it ends up being, MAY get 30 CHANCES at a save this year- tops. This team will not win more than 51 games... I GUARANTEE IT.

you are stupid, i mean really, there really isnt anything else to say about that post.

so you are basically saying we are going to be the worst team in the history of modern baseball essentially.

nice.

I trust that Beinfest knew what he was doing in getting Bowyer.

I just hope he becomes an amazing closer to show he was worthy of having Castillo leave South Florida.

THE TEAMS RECORD WILL BE:

51-111

BE REALISTIC, THERE ARE NO MORE THAN 4 PLAYERS ON THIS TEAM THAT WOULD MAKE ANYONE ELSE'S MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER.

WE WILL BE THE WORST TEAM IN MLB... WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE ACCEPT THIS????

All of you fools getting on here saying that the Fish are going to win 70 or more games are going to be in for a very unpleasant surprise... But at least you can make it easier on yourself by not expecting 70 wins out of these little punks... Lots of messy baseball in our very near future, kids.

And what is with you people thinking that Cabrera is going to hit .300+ with 30+ HR and 100 RBI??? Who is going to pitch to Miguel Cabrera with this surrounding cast??? Cabrera has a terrible attitude at times and will strike out 150 times being an impatient little punk.

51 WINS.... I GUARANTEE IT....

I'm an idiot? Maybe I am... BECAUSE I BOUGHT SEASON TICKETS TO WATCH DOUBLE A LEVEL BASEBALL!!!!!!

Why? Because I love the game, and I love this team..... Unfortunately, I don't live in Fantasy Land- as do many of you fine people.

Way to contribute! And all in less than an hour! "Cabrera is an impatient little punk" :lol :lol
