MARLINS NOTEBOOK

McKeon's assessment: `It's a joke'

Calls umpire warning double standard

BY KEVIN BAXTER

Although plate umpire Dan Iassogna warned both benches after Dontrelle Willis nearly hit Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero with a first-inning pitch Sunday, Expo pitchers Javier Vazquez and Rocky Biddle were allowed to stay in the game after plunking Juan Encarnaci?n and Brian Banks.

That inspired a long and animated discussion between Iassogna and Marlins manager Jack McKeon.

''My point was why was there a warning. Because the guy pitched inside? He didn't hit him,'' McKeon said. ``Now their guys can throw inside and hit our guys but it's OK? They can pitch inside but we can't? That's what I asked him. Why is it one kid can pitch inside and hit guys, and we can't pitch inside and not hit guys?''

McKeon said he believes the umpires were warned by the commissioner's office not to let the game get out of hand because of the bad blood between the teams. In spring training, Marlins pitcher Brad Penny hit Guerrero, precipitating a brawl that led to three suspensions.

And in the past seven games between the clubs, seven Marlins batters have been hit -- including Mike Lowell, who had a bone in his hand broken by a Hector Almonte pitch nine days ago.

So far, however, the Marlins have not retaliated.

''We're the guys that got a guy with a broken wrist hit by their pitcher,'' McKeon said. ``Our top home run hitter is out for the season. We've had seven guys hit in the seven games we've played with these guys . . . and we get the warning. It's a joke.''

HAPPY TO LEAVE

Although the Marlins won two of three in San Juan for their first series win on the road in a month, catcher Mike Redmond was glad to get out of Puerto Rico.

''I don't know if guys enjoy playing down here,'' Redmond said of the Expos' alternate summer home. ``It's kind of a hassle. It seems like just a big process. Tough travel. A small stadium.

``It's great for Puerto Rico and for the guys that live here. But it's definitely probably not my favorite place.''

Still, Redmond, who played in Hiram Bithorn Stadium in 1998 when he was catching for Santurce of the Puerto Rican winter league, was impressed by the upgrades that have been made to the park, especially in the cramped clubhouses.

''Maybe only two showers worked [then]. And they were all cold water,'' he said. ``This place is not that bad.''

But it's not the kind of place you want to visit if your team's in a pennant race. Especially when it means your Sunday night flight to New York will be nearly five times longer than it would have been if you were coming from Montreal, where the series was originally scheduled to have been played.

''The travel this time of year . . . is tough,'' Redmond said. ``But we've got 20 days left, and if you can't get yourself excited and ready to play this time of year with what's at stake, then you need to look in the mirror a little bit.''

yea, kind of lame by the umps

Do the Umps get a Report Card? e.g. From the Managers. That first inning warning was incredibly absurd! Is it true there was no Crew Chief there? Who is in charge of this fiasco?

not from the managers....

not sure where though

What is Redmond talking about? Is not like he is playing every day . . .

you're right, his opinion should be invalid.

Yep there was no crew chief. So they had no one in charge...

There was someone there overseeing it though, I remember someone talking about that.

This is ridiculous, shows you how much the MLB hates us. 8 hit batsmen in the last 7 games against the Spos and not one single penalty laid on them yet. But, on the other hand, we got the very severe penalty of losing Mike Lowell until the playoffs. Yay.

It is amazing, but the Expos are given an advantage because they are Major League Baseball's team!

There was some kind of Umpire Exec Administrator there but, obviously, he wasn't "overseeing" anything. Good for McKeon for really bitchin' but he was yelling at incompetent jack-assses.

I love JMac!

Redmond is a spoiled, whinning p***y. He acts like hes crossing the Sahara with a camel in the summer.

no he needs to stop taking the MLB for granted and grow some balls and stop whinning about a 5 hour flight (nap) to puerto rico to sit on a bench and make 1.2 million dollars while he's at it.

And don't forget all the fineass females in PR. He needs to stop crying.

I'd never thought this day would come, but...

I agree with you.

Castro makes half of what Redmond is making, and has made a much bigger contribution to this team.

shut up Redmond :banghead

I agree.

I would love to be in Redmond's shoes!

Redmond said it was tough traveling. That is a comment echoed by every team that has had to make the trip this year...including the Expos. The comment about the flight being 5 times longer to NY than if the team had been in Montreal was made by the reporter, not Redmond.

It would help if you actually read it before sticking your foot in your mouth.

i don't even know where to start with this....

Seriously our team looks soft. We did't relaliate after the Expos take out our best player for the year. The team got hit a couple times in this series and did nothing about it. Yes we are in a race but you can't just be a teams b!tch the whole damn time.

or maybe we are mature?

wow we look soft.... who gives a flying f***?

like we need Penny or Beckett or Pudge or someone to get suspended for 5 games

they've built a 7-game lead on the Expos now, that's plenty of retaliation for me.

I rather come out with the win, than with the retaliation.

If we were out of the race, then that is a different matter.

Plus, we can't afford any suspensions.

And where would you rather be: The 153degree field or in the dugout with that misty stuff?

How about this then.....call Vladimir Nunez up.

Whenever a Marlin gets hit, bring him in. He decks the next hitter. Then gets ejected.

Once he is ejected, bring in the real pitcher.

and what if he charges the mound?

leave him out to dry?

ooookay

OK, can people who hit us at least get warned? This is disgusting already.....
