Japan vs. USA is only on Deportes???? I don't get Deportes on DirecTV and this si the prime, will ESPN or ESPN2 pick it up?

ESPN hasn't let anything drop yet about USA-Japan en Ingles. The games may be reversed for television though. I could see the USA-Japan game go to 8PM and the PR-DOM game go to 4PM.

Yup, ESPN2 will have the games at 4PM, 8PM, and 11PM live and the 1PM game tape delayed overnight....all in English. The 1PM game will be on ESPN Syndication which if you have Dish Network that means channel 145 or WJAN 41 in Miami if you have cable or DirecTV. ESPN Deportes will have every game live in Spanish. MLB.tv and XM Radio will carry each game live as well. Most live games from Anaheim on ESPN or ESPN2 will be in HD.

Peavy to open Round 2 for USA

Padres righty expects a dogfight from Japan

ANAHEIM -- This time there will be no rest for Jake Peavy.

When the U.S. begins the second round of the World Baseball Classic Sunday against Japan at Angel Stadium, the Padres right-hander will not be strapped into a three-inning limit as he was this past Tuesday when the U.S. opened with a 2-0 win over Mexico.

 

"The Jake Peavy situation, that was his second start of the spring," Team USA manager Buck Martinez said on Friday. "He had started for the Padres and already thrown 39 pitches in two innings. This time, I don't know that we're locked in to a certain amount of innings as much as we are watching things develop as we get into the game."

 

In the first round, starters were limited to 65 pitches. Though Peavy threw only 23, while allowing only an infield single and striking out three, he was lifted after the third inning. A succession of six relievers followed and shut down the Mexicans on four hits.

 

In the second round, the pitch limit is extended to 80. And in the parallel universe of Spring Training this year, starters are beginning to stretch out as the days dwindle toward the season openers on April 3.

 

"He breezed the other day," Martinez said about Peavy. "He was free and easy. And he did throw a few more pitches down in the bullpen after that start. We would be comfortable for sure with four innings this time and maybe even five. So I think we're at that point now."

 

Peavy will probably face Japanese right-hander Koji Uehara, the split-finger artist from the Yomiuri Giants, who once struck out Barry Bonds three times in a Major League Baseball-Nippon Professional Baseball All-Star Game in Tokyo Dome during the 2002 tour.

 

Because it's his third start of the spring, Peavy said he expects to air it out a little bit on Sunday. Esteban Loaiza did just that on Thursday night when he pitched into the sixth inning and threw 68 pitches in Mexico's 9-1 victory over Canada.

 

"I would hope I could go four or five innings," Peavy said. "I should easily be able to stretch four or five out of 80 pitches. And I hope to do every bit of that. Obviously, if you have a low pitch count you can go a little more. That's the biggest thing for me, watching that pitch count. (The Japanese) put the ball in play. I don't strike out a lot of guys so I hope to get some easy outs."

Peavy, who led the National League with a 2.27 ERA in 2004 and 216 strikeouts last season, also has had his own success against the Japanese during the 2004 tour.

 

U.S. teammates Peavy, Roger Clemens, Dontrelle Willis, Michael Young and Vernon Wells were on that MLB All-Star team. That November, Peavy pitched the final game of the eight-game series and worked the first six innings of a 5-0 victory in Tokyo Dome, allowing only two hits, while striking out four and walking none.

 

During that tour, Clemens befriended Uehara and gave the Japanese pitcher his glove as keepsake. The Rocket and Peavy also became tight.

 

"I expect a dogfight from Japan," Peavy said. "When I went over in 2004 I saw the talent they have over there. I have the utmost respect for the style of baseball they play. It's going to be neat."

I thought they broke the ties by run differential or whatever, not head to head matchups.
