The Marlins' 10-4 start in Grapefruit League play is a mirage, but first-time manager Joe Girardi's touch with his players is not. Girardi has been working the team hard, but after half his players made the 110-mile trip to Viera for a split-squad game last Thursday, Girardi told the entire club to sleep in Friday and not to report before 10:30 a.m. Girardi and his staff are doing far more teaching than most staffs at the major-league level ? and the players are applying what they've learned ...

Hanley Ramirez appears to be distancing himself from Robert Andino in the Marlins' shortstop competition, but Andino could fill the team's void at second base. Dan Uggla, a Rule V draft pick, became the leading contender at second after Pokey Reese retired, but the Marlins also could use him in left. Ramirez and Andino could form an exciting double-play combination.

"He's played great," a scout says of Ramirez. "He's getting a lot of batting-practice fastballs, but he's doing damage. He's still going to chase off-speed stuff once the season starts, but for his confidence, he's doing real well. I think he's going to be a stud. From the neck down, everything is there. We just have to wait and see how he handles the big leagues."

Uggla has that great bat but his D is very shaky at times, dont know if Andino fits that 2nd base role just yet either.

Uggla in left?

Not so sure about that

yeah I don't know where that came from either...

well if willingham continues to produce and play well as catcher, and we want Uggla's bat in the lineup...would it be so bad to give him a shot out there like stokes is getting

Uggla's bat could be solid from the 2b position, but in LF he would probably be the worst player (statistically) in the majors

So would Aguila, Reed, or Abercrombie. It's just a bad situation.
