I just read on usatoday.com that Jeff Nelson had been released by the Cards. He threw 5.2 IP, gave up 1 hit and struck out seven. Anybody know of a reason beyond the stats as to why he was cut?

Not sure.. I havent seen this news on the offical site yet, He actually pitched today against the Fish, I was at the game. If they did indeed cut him and he is cheap the Fish should go after him to have a verteran in the pen..

I see no need for him, nor any reason why he would come to Florida.

If he had focused more on his pitching instead of staring at the bottle blond with the fake rack in the section I was sitting in today, maybe he'd still be there.

Cards cut Nelson, Daubach

By Joe Strauss

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

His 13-pitch performance done, Jeff Nelson left Sunday's perfect seventh inning certain he'd convinced the Cardinals that his 39-year-old right arm still held enough life to merit promotion from a nonroster invitee to a spot on the team's opening-day roster.

When manager Tony La Russa summoned him to his office afterward, Nelson expected to be told he had made the club after allowing only one hit and no runs in six Grapefruit League appearances.

Nelson instead received the surprise of his 14-year career when La Russa notified him of his release. The move leaves the Cardinals with four relievers - Alan Benes, Brian Falkenborg, Josh Hancock and Adam Wainwright - vying for two spots. Nelson was left to search for another team with barely a week remaining before opening day.

"It's definitely a shock," Nelson said moments after leaving La Russa's office. "I don't know how you pitch better. Do I not give up any hits? I don't know. I really don't know."

Nelson shouldn't feel too bad. He will catch on somewhere, and quick. The Cards are probably going to go with Adam Wainright in that spot.

Go Cards!!!
