April 13, 200620 yr that count against the team like we owed pudge and that picther that went to the mets or the braves forgot his name .. bascially did we take any hit on any of these guys salaries this year
April 13, 200620 yr We're paying Pudge the last installment, $2M; Leiter $1.25M (includes $.25M to his charity); and I believe Delgado $1M.
April 13, 200620 yr Maybe it's just me, but we've been backloading contracts since the early days of this franchise. The first time, it was Alex Fernandez, who we kept paying three years after he retired. Then we had Pudge and Hampton. Now it's Delgado and Leiter.

The first time, it was Alex Fernandez, who we kept paying three years after he retired. Then we had Pudge and Hampton. Now it's Delgado and Leiter. Hampton's deal net saved the Marlins approximately $23 million. The payment regarding Delgado was part of the deal to send him to NY, not really between Delgado and the Marlins, but rather between the Mets and the Fish. Backloading contracts are done all the time MLB. It's not unique to this franchise.
April 13, 200620 yr Author well least those 5 mil could be used to help pay for cab and willis next year thye should look into signing shadez and hammie to longer term deals those guys are going to rock for a while
April 13, 200620 yr There's no reason to lockup Ramirez or Willingham now. They'll be paid pretty close to minimum for the next few years and frankly, as much as I like both players, there's no guarantee that either player will pan out even though both seem to off to great starts. Let's wait a year or two and see how well they mature into bonafide MLB players. As for Willis and Cabs, I made this point in a previous thread some days/week ago. For all dire predictions of the financial neccessity to trade them in fact even with Cabs going to $4 million or so, and Willis to say $7 million, with the above mentioned $$$ coming of payroll next season, their impact on overal payroll will be only $3+/- million in 2007.
April 13, 200620 yr Assuming he has similiar statistics to last season, Cabrera will get no less than $6M next season and probably closer to $7M. He can compare himself to what guys like Pujols and Teixeira made at the same point of their careers.

He can compare himself to what guys like Pujols and Teixeira made at the same point of their careers. The $4 million number I used with Cabrera was simply repeating what's been published in a couple of local papers. I honestly don't know what he'll make next season but it's hard to believe he'll make that ($6-7 million) big a jump.
April 13, 200620 yr 2006 Pudge $2,000,000 Delgado $1,000,000 Leiter $250,000 (donation) 2007 Delgado $2,000,000 Leiter $1,250,000 ($250k donation) 2008 Delgado $4,000,000 Leiter $2,250,000 (again) 2009 Leiter $250,000 (Al Leiter, the gift that keeps giving) There's no reason to lockup Ramirez or Willingham now. After this season, I want to see them dish out 4 buyout deals at a minimum. Cabrera - $6.5, $9, $11.5. Total Value - 3 years, $ 27 million (modeled after Teixeira's buyout) Willis - $7, $9, $ 11. Total Value - 3 years, $ 27 million (no comparisons. assumed raises) Hermida - $500k, $750k, $3, $5, $7 - 5 years $15.25 million (modeled after Bay) Hanley - $500k, $750k, $2.25, $3.5, $5 - 5 years, $12 million (modeled after Crosby and Peralta) Those 4 are the core, there is no question about it. They would all take those deals following 2006 and be happy with the guarenteed money, and every one of those contracts makes sense for the Marlins. I agree with you about Willingham, and Jacobs, Vargas, Olsen, whoever, unless they really break out in 2006 and push themselves into the core. After 2007, I would reasses the pitchers and other hitters we have and think about some buyouts, but we don't need to be signing the whole team. Those 4 are special though, and the organization needs to stop being idiots and get it done.
April 13, 200620 yr I can't believe we have to keep paying Leiter. They should have tied some type of "Performance Clause" into the deal like the NFL. The only thing worse would be owing De "Loss" Santos money.
April 13, 200620 yr that count against the team like we owed pudge and that picther that went to the mets or the braves forgot his name .. bascially did we take any hit on any of these guys salaries this year he's talking about mike hampton.....

For obvious reasons, they occur more often with teams that expect a substantial increase in revenues whether from the affect of winning games or opening a new ballpark. The Marlins fit that to a 't', well they hope for the latter.
