April 17, 200620 yr Rookie reliever Martinez to undergo MRI on elbow By Juan C. Rodriguez South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted April 17 2006 MIAMI GARDENS ? A misstep on the mound Sunday grounded right-hander Carlos Martinez. The rookie reliever did not travel to Cincinnati after the 7-5 loss to the Nationals. Instead, he will undergo an MRI today on his elbow. During his second inning of work, Martinez's plant foot slipped and he felt some discomfort after completing the delivery. Martinez stayed in the game and recorded the inning's final two outs, one of which was a Jose Vidro sacrifice fly that gave the Nationals a one-run lead. The problem affected the way he positioned his wrist, Martinez said, causing his ball to run uncontrollably. "I want to know what's going on with my elbow," he said. "I don't want them to give me 15 days [on the disabled list]." Martinez, who has logged a 2.70 ERA through his first six games (62/3 innings), also was a protagonist in a bench-clearing incident. Marlon Anderson took offense to Martinez's reaction after striking him out in the seventh. Anderson pointed his bat at Martinez and started walking toward the mound. Catcher Miguel Olivo altered Anderson's path, but players from both teams poured onto the field. "After the first pitch he looked at me bad and starting laughing," said Martinez, whose mound demeanor is reminiscent of Antonio Alfonseca's. "I struck him out and you know I do that all the time. He took it the wrong way. He thought I was showing him up, but I don't do that." HOMER HAVENS UP NEXT Just when Marlins pitchers were getting used to cavernous Dolphin Stadium, they are off on a three-city trip to some of the least forgiving venues. Starting tonight in Cincinnati the Marlins will play their next nine at Great American Ballpark, Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park and Chicago's Wrigley Field, all of which traditionally are homer havens. Wrigley can go either way depending on the wind. "We can't walk 10 people," said manager Joe Girardi, referring to Saturday's season-high total. "Don't give them extra outs. If they hit a home run, make them hit solo home runs. We're going to give up some home runs probably in the next two parks we go to. Law of averages. Look at the games there and there are some home runs hit. Just don't make it any worse." Through Friday, Wrigley (0.750) and Citizens Bank (0.533) had the sixth- and third-lowest home run park factors in the majors. The figures are derived from a formula that compares the rate of home vs. road stats. Anything less than 1.000 represents a pitcher-friendly park. Don't let the early returns fool you. Last season the three parks all ranked among the game's top 11 in home run park factor, with Citizens Bank (1.289) and Great American (1.263) coming in at second and third, respectively. Wrigley also favored the hitter with a 1.049 mark. ATTENDANCE BARELY TOPS 10,000 The Marlins drew an announced crowd of 10,296 fans Sunday, giving them a total of 87,370 for their season-opening six-game homestand. ... Girardi's brother, John, an internist in Chicago, already has purchased 50 tickets for the Marlins' April 26 game at Wrigley. ... RF Jeremy Hermida (groin) missed his fifth consecutive game. He should be ready early this week. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins
April 17, 200620 yr i hope that for our sake martinez becomes listed as day to day and that Hermida can hopefully come back within today or tomorrow.
April 17, 200620 yr For K-Mart's sake I hope they're careful with him. He's our future closer. yep and our most reliable bullpen arm as of yet.

So was Valerio De Los Santos in his first few appearances. Not taking anything away from Martinez, he's pitched extraordinarily well so far this season, but before annoint him as the savior of the bullpen let's see how he holds up over the season. I doubt at this point many teams have legitimate scouting reports on the guy or whether hitters have hit their prime. I'm hoping a) he's okay physically and b) he has the stuff to become a real contributor but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
April 17, 200620 yr A scouting report won't help anyone hit a 96 mph fastball and a nasty slider. His only real issue is control. De Los Santos was pretty good for us, but I doubt he struck out 9 dudes in 6 innings.
April 17, 200620 yr Where the heck did we get him? Or is he out of our farm? I don't remember hearing anything about him until recently but he impresses me bigtime. Also, I thought Resop would be more in the mix, are they just waiting to throw him in there?

K-Mart also has some control issues, but it matters a lot less when he's striking out almost 1.5 batters per inning.

April 17, 200620 yr Carlos was in Jupiter last year with a call up to AA and AAA........Resop needs to be more consistent with the strike zone....some good days and some bad days...needs to turn the bad days into good days...more work should solve that problem....and more confidence in his own ability

For some reason I was under the impression that he threw 95 consistently and topped out a little higher. Is he throwing less hard now? I don't recall seeing him go higher than 93/94 this year and last year.
April 17, 200620 yr he does throw harder than 93-94....clocked at 98 and again at 99 in spring training....needs some..how you say in spanish? BOLAS.....
April 17, 200620 yr he does throw harder than 93-94....clocked at 98 and again at 99 in spring training....needs some..how you say in spanish? BOLAS..... lol :lol Unfortunately, that's not something he can be taught. Do you think maybe bringing him up last season and letting him get ripped apart a few times brought down his confidence? I feared we may have done that to him.
April 17, 200620 yr no...he threw nervously this spring and then again until Olsen got called up....afraid that if he did not strike everyone out that he would be sent down to AAA...he has been advised to throw like he knows how and don't worry about the future..that will take care of itself...can't worry about losing your spot...but you can take steps to secure it by throwing strikes and getting outs....NO FREE PASSES....Girardi does not like BB...could care less about hits...those happen...why give some one a free base and possibly another out and a chance to score more runs...
April 17, 200620 yr How has he done in his short time in AAA? If K-Mart goes on the DL, I hope we bring up Resop instead of Messenger.
April 17, 200620 yr Messenger was called up last night...he will be in Cinci...Resop has only thrown 1 inning...no runs..no hits...NO BB...1k surmise both will throw in their respective games tonight...no word on Carlos yet today
April 17, 200620 yr f***! i hope he bounces back alright. 96 mph heater and a nasty slider! that's brad lidge type stuff right there.
